DNC Chair caught in bald face lie

The Washington Examiner reported on Tuesday that Debbie Wasserman Schultz told a training session of Jewish Democrats on Monday that Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, has said that Republicans are dangerous to Israel because they criticize President Barack Obama’s record. The Democratic National Committee Chairperson took to the airwaves Tuesday to deny that she made the statement and went even farther when she accused columnist Philip Klein of misquoting her intentionally because he worked for a conservative leaning newspaper.

Oren denied the comment.

The Florida congresswoman argued that she never attributed the comments to Oren and that she just said the GOP was treating the Middle East “like a political football, which is dangerous for Israel” when she appeared on Fox News.

Klein immediately defended his story and has since posted an audio tape that confirms his story is accurate and truthful, meaning Wasserman Schultz has been neither.

I think I have just caught the Washington Examiner in a bald-faced lie, which is hardly surprising.
Wasserman-Schultz did not say that "Republicans are dangerous to Israel" as the Examiner reported.
What she said, and there is an audiotape to support this, is "“We know, and I’ve heard no less than Ambassador Michael Oren say this, that what the Republicans are doing is dangerous for Israel.”
Way different statement. If Oren were asked whether Republicans are dangerous to Israel, as the story suggests, of course he would have said no.
Edit: I'm voting for Barack Obama! Hooray for the USA!

Count me in as well.

Not sure what Swampy wants to accomplish by posting these smear pieces; there is NOTHING that she points out that would make me vote against my interests and support ANYONE in the GOP. Not sure that anyone in the middle is swayed by her anger, either.

You didn't eve read the link or my excerpt did you, Gutenbert?

WS said that ambassador Oren said the Republicans are dangerous to Isreal. The Ambassador denied he said that. Then WS said she never said it, then she said Klein misquoted her. Klien then produced the tape where she says Oren made the statement.

If you're going to be a liar, it helps if you can remember what you lied about. And in this electronic age you better assume someone is taping or recording.

I think it is perfectly legitimate to criticize a "public" figure such as Schultz because of her position and profile. no problem with that. of course, it's the source that is the issue here.

I feel compelled to point out to the lefties here the foibles they like to ignore or deny and often don't even hear about from the lef leaning media. Which is probably the same reason you rag on the righties.

Swampy,

I'm not going to defend the Democratic representative, but I am going to defend veracity by pointing out that your version is not an accurate analysis. Firstly, there is a world of difference between "heard" and "said." People do often hear what they want to hear, despite what was said. Case in point, you. Further, as Gutenberg pointed out, there was misquotation involved. And finally, in the interests of diplomacy, I don't think anyone will get an on the record, verbatim account of what the ambassador said.

Here's what WS said on the tape.

"Wasserman Schultz is heard on the audio tape saying “We know, and I’ve heard no less than Ambassador Michael Oren say this, that what the Republicans are doing is dangerous for Israel.”

"Ambassador Oren quickly refuted the characterization that Wasserman Schultz attributed to him even before the release of the tape. He issued a statement Tuesday saying, “I categorically deny that I ever characterized Republican policies as harmful to Israel. Bipartisan support is a paramount national interest for Israel, and we have great friends on both sides of the aisle.”

The leader of your party will lie and lie about lying for the sole purpose of gaining votes. And calling out Klein for "misquoting" her shows she has no compunctions about tarnishing a man's career to get votes.

Both sides play loose on issues trying to gain the soundbite vote. However, Wasserman-Schultz said "what republicans are doing". Oren denied saying anything about "republican policies". These aren't the same things. Wiggle room if you will. Just typical political crap.

I don't think that it is correct to say that what Republicans are saying is particularly dangerous for Israel - or at least, at the moment I don't think there is enough information available to reliably draw that conclusion.

And it does look like Wasserman Schultz did lie by claiming she didn't say what the reporter said she said.

I can't say that I've been all that impressed by Wasserman Schultz when I've seen her on political talk shows. She is, understandably given her position, a hyperpartisan, but hyperpartisanship is not a legitimate excuse for denying the truth when confronted with it unless you just don't care about the truth. She needs to sit back and reflect on how her hyperpartisanship is affecting her ability to assess things as they really are rather than how she'd like them to be. And she needs to reflect on how it just makes things worse politically to deny the truth when there is clear evidence that what she is claiming is not true.

Just in case anyone is thinking that this episode somehow shows that there is equivalence between Republican mendacity and Democratic mendacity, that just isn't the case. This incident wouldn't make the top twenty in important campaign misleadings/untruths that Republicans - including the top ranks of the Republican presidential campaign - have been telling on a regular basis. In general, in neither the quantity or quality of misleadings and outright lies are the Democrats anywhere close to equal to the Republicans in this election cycle.

Yes, and saying "what the Republicans are doing is dangerous for Israel" as Wasserman-Schultz said

is a far different statement from

"The Republicans are dangerous for Israel." Which is what the Examiner reported that she said.

That is the Examiner's baldfaced lie.
