I'm not surprised. You'll also find 'bouncers' and 'security guards' in any company building in many places in India and Pakistan.. anywhere in the 'developing countries'.

I fondly remember the security guards in the international bank in Karachi, Pakistan. A collection of NASTY looking guys... looked like they were there to rob the place. One enormous fellow (6'8" at least, well over 300 lbs of muscle and nasty) had crossed bandoliers of ammo and an ENORMOUS shotgun.. looked like a 10 gage. If he was going to fire that sucker, the only safe place would be well behind him. He also had daggers stuck all over the bandolier... a real Bandito.

You know, Pakistan is one country I have no desire to visit. What with their views on women in general and their proclivity to kill or at the very least imprison blasphemers, I just don't think I would feel comfortable there.

Oh, definitely stay far away. I was there 20 years ago. It wasn't THAT bad, but it was loaded with Afghan refugees. When you think about it, the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan was the seminal beginning of a lot of political movements:

1- The collapse of the Soviet Union (really... the cost and dissent from veterans definitely helped accelerate the collapse).
2- The creation of the Taliban. And their arming and training by the US.
3- The creation of Al Quaeda.
4- the rise of fundamentalist jihadist forces in that area

If someone said 'time travel' I'd recommend going back and stopping that invasion.

We had an issue in some hospitals in the Twin Cities where a collection company was at your bedside in the ER threatening you if you couldn't come up with a way to pay your bills. They have since been removed.
