Brokeback Contract

A Utah Theater owner pulls Brokeback Mountain on the day it was to premier.

[news.yahoo.com]

I'd just love to have a seat in some of the theaters that'll be showing this movie and hear the reaction of people who went with no info other than looking at the poster...

"Uhhhh, Enid--I thought you said this was a cowboy movie! Them fekkers're @#$%&!"

Hopefully there are some of the old Dealmac crowd around to remind me that a theater is a business owned by a person with the right to run his business as he sees fit.

Of course the owner of the theater should run his business as he sees fit.

And if he is morally offended, he is taking a principled stand by not showcasing Brokeback Mountain when he could be making money off of this film.

However, if he is merely trying to prevent people from seeing it*, his plan is sure to backfire. He's calling greater attention to the movie, causing more people to want to see it. My bet is that there will be a high percentage of people buying the DVD or watching it on PPV in Utah.

*Warning: Subtle distinction.

And of course he should pay whatever damages are forthcoming for having broken a contract.

I just wish people would be required to actually see a piece of art before they are entitled to be outraged by it.

Sounds like the argument I kept hearing when people wanted me to quit whining about the changes over at DM.

My guess is that this will never see a court and that something will be worked out amicably. Obviously the cinema and the distributor have an ongoing relationship, and one movie is not going to make or break it.

Don't get me wrong. I don't like the cinema owner's decision. I just support his right to make that decision, and I don't think he's a bad person for making it. Perhaps close-minded, but I don't think he has evil intentions.

That's a great piece of brain work. Did you actually think of that--or is it a quote?
(I don't mean that to sound as demeaning as it came out.... but it's midnight... bear with me!)

I'm serious! I really like it. I'd like to use it. In fact, I'd like to use it OFTEN.

On further reflection, I'd say it differently if given another chance

"I just wish people would be required to actually see a piece of art before being outraged by it."

It's badly constructed the other way.

It's still badly constructed. You've split the infinitive, for example.

How about:

"I just wish people would be required to see a piece of art before showing outrage over it."

They can BE outraged without having seen it, but they should keep that insanity to themselves. They should at LEAST have seen it BEFORE they go out in public with their outrage.

At LEAST.

And I'm sure this theatre owner also pulled every other movie that has any content that goes against his interpretation of the bible. Oh wait, that would mean he couldn't show any movies! I guess picking and choosing is ok then. They should let the 1% of sane people there escape and then just fill Utah in with concrete or something.

I can't wait for the rest of the movie marketing scheme to kick in:

BrokeBack Mountain lunch boxes for the kids!

BrokeBack Mountain play figures with "kung-fu grip"!

How about Brokeback Mountain drink cups from Burger King? Guess where you'd push the straw in..

"I guess I’m out of touch with our target demographic."

Cowboys Association has announced a new rodeo event. In
addition to Bareback, Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding,
cowboys will also compete in Rump Riding....

I saw Narnia yesterday and loved it. It would take at least a million dollars
to get me to watch gay cowboys. And they would have to include a barf bag.

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.... it starts out with all that beautiful Western scenery and men riding horses,

but ultimately

IT IS JUST A PAIN IN THE ASS!

Sales Lackluster For New Brokeback Mountain Video Game

LOS ANGELES--Officials from Electronic Arts (EA) say they are baffled by the lackluster
sales for their latest video game, Brokeback Mountain: The Cowboy Diaries. As of its
release two weeks ago, the game has sold a paltry 3,000 copies, forcing EA to rethink
its strategy for targeting the 18-35 male demographic. “I don’t get it. People love
cowboys, right? This is the ultimate cowboy game,” said Dan Mattrick, EA Sports vice-
president. “You can ride on the range, herd cattle, shoot people—heck you might even
fall in love with another cowboy. This is a deep, multi-layered game with endless
possibilities. I guess I’m out of touch with our target demographic. Now I’m starting
to second guess our latest video game project, How Stella Got Her Groove Back 2K7.”

I've always enjoyed homoeroticism in the media--especially in football! Where one team tries to get deep penetration into the other guy's backfield, and at the same time THAT guy's trying to get into his opponent's endzone? There's always some pretty-looking fella with his hands on the butt of a large manly-man who's doubled over in front.

But that's all cool and safe, because these are FOOTBALL players... none of them has ever turned up @#$%&. Just like cowboys.

OK, VATO, we already know you're a deeply closeted homosexual. No need to push our faces in it. You probably have wife, kids, friends, and/or family you're hiding your sexuality from, so I won't judge. I how much of the Latino community is about homosexuality. There's that whole macho thing you're up against (your nickname VATO speaks volumes). I know some gay latinos that justify their sexual activity with "You're not gay of you pitch, only of you catch", but clearly you love the cokc, so you can't use that one. Oh well.

Anyway, I just wanted to offer my support to you and your difficult and uncomfortable psychological situation. Many heterosexuals, myself included, support our gay friends coming out. Perhaps someday you'll be brave enough to be true to yourself. Until then, hang in there and try not to spew too much hate. It will be easier to accept who you are if you haven't demonized it.
