Trump just violated his oath to the Constitution
His first act as President.

Specifically, the minute Trump was sworn in, he violated Article I, Section 9 of the U.S. Constitution, known as the emoluments clause.

The emoluments clause prohibits any person holding a federal office (such as, for example, the presidency) from accepting any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state. In other words: People in the federal government aren't allowed to take anything at all from any foreign government entity.

Trump, however, retains ownership of his international business empire as president. And his business empire is taking in a stream of payments from foreign governments--money that ultimately goes into his pockets.

For example, the Kuwait National Day celebration, thrown by the Kuwaiti embassy, will be held at Trump's downtown D.C. hotel in February.

The NPR show Fresh Air interviewed a Repub and a Dem lawyer who worked in the GHW Bush and Obama White House as ethics monitors.

It's a very revealing listen it drives home the point that, love him or hate him, he's going against the Constitution's emoluments clause.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Congress is going to hold that card in reserve. If Trump gets too uppity, they'll play it and install Pence. Or an autopen. Same difference.

This is truly the nonsense those interested in a progressive, diverse, advancing America must address.

Congress will keep Trump in the Presidency so long as he signs their bills. Once they've done all the things they've been talking about doing forever - repealing the ACA, privatize Social Security, deport the immigrants they don't like, gerrymander their way to a majority for a half century, further enrich the .01% at everyone else's expense, et cetera - THEN they'll impeach him and moderate some of their harsher laws to seem less evil and blame Trump for all the bad stuff.

At least that's what they think their plan is. Kind of like that 6-week abortion ban in Ohio that was rejected in favor of a 20-week ban which still lacks exception for mother's health, rape, or incest. 20 weeks almost sounds reasonable, doesn't it?

The reality is that Trump appears to be pushing hard to steal their base away in a Nazi-esque play to authoritarianism, and I think they've underestimated his appeal to their masses and the generally gullible populace that is predominantly concerned with securing unto themselves ever greater consumer comforts at lower cost and effort.

Fortunately, a majority of American voters did not vote for Pres. Trump.
