The new 45 GOP narrative: He's not an obstructionist, just an idiot.

A senior WH official tells @PeterAlexander that POTUS wasn't telling Comey to end Flynn investigation and suggest this is the way he speaks

[twitter.com]

Heard this last night from some Rs on Hill. "Trump was just spouting off, wasn't serious attempt at obstruction."

[twitter.com]

Rep. James Comer, a member of the Oversight Committee, says Trump may well have been joking to Comey. "It looks different on paper."

So, "stop investigating Comey" is like "grab her pussy", just inelegant locker room talk.

That will be the new GOP narrative flag that they are trying out.

And the Wannsee Conference transcripts made it look like more than a business lunch.

Yup! Just locker room joshing. 45 is a fantastic kidder!

That will serve him well as he deals with North Korea.

He managed to kid just enough people to be elected president. Although this probably reflects more on the gullibility of a large chunk of the populace.

There's not going to be enough in the Comey memos to impeach. Obstruction goes to intent; that can't be established from one-sided notes from a private conversation alone.

Supposedly he also told several others about the attempt to get him to back off the investigation at the time. Such notes are admissible in court.

Now, you can say it's Comey's word (supported by contemporaneous notes and conversations) against Trump's.

Whose word are you going to believe? Even Republicans would come to the same conclusion, although they may not admit it.

Yup, pretty much describes the typical Trump voter.

So it seems to be that the legal theory here is that since Trump lies all the time, everybody knows that he doesn't mean it when he says something so anything he does say that could be construed as proving him guilty if he were a normal person is not admissible because he's a liar.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I don't think obstruction of justice is going to get anywhere. Fact is, Trump DOES spout off a lot of things without thinking and it is almost impossible to discern if he meant any of them at all.

Obstruction of justice isn't going to get Trump impeached. The Russia thing, that's where it's at.
