Six-Figure Salary
Posted by: space-time

several web sites talk about "six-figure salary" in context of this NASA job opening. I did not read details, perhaps this job is located in an area where 6 figures is a lot of money, or perhaps not.

Still, I am curious if "Six-figure" salary is a new benchmark these days.

Not sure what you're getting at here.

The median US household income is less than $60,000, I believe.
This six-figure salary is supposedly between $124K and $187K, so...

Yes, I think more than double the household median could be considered a lot of money to most people.

$1,000.00 is six figures. (likely not what is meant, but look before you leap)

Six figure salary?! Pshaw, mine's been six since I was a little snapper. E.g., $18,000.00. Count'em.

A "six-figure" salary has historically meant $100,000.00 or more.

Course, at CNNWAPOPMSNBC it could mean anything not based on fact.

I imagine most people think that a 100,000+ salary is a huge amount, and the news headlines are trying to use that as click-bait.

Given the responsibilities and job requirements, this would be a decrease in salary for someone in the private sector. SL, i.e. Senior Level, would most likely mean based in D.C. For comparison engineers not in supervisory positions top out at GS 13 or if very lucky, the GS 14 level. Very much below the private sector.

His issue is that he takes EVERY opportunity to inject his opinion that anything except Fox news is "fake news". I'm tired of it. Here you go billyboy: even Faux News reported on it: [video.foxnews.com]

Give it an effing rest. I've never decided to use "Ignore this user" before, but I think I'm finally going to do it. I encourage others to do the same.

Ditto northern California. No way you could qualify to buy a house around here on that salary.

A six-figure salary in San Francisco officially qualifies you to be "poor."

"Northern California" is a bigger place than you seem to realize. 100K around here is doing very, very, well, and will buy you a very nice place in town, and a summer place up in the hills.

Around here, 6-figures is 3 times the median salary ($34k). Nationwide, it would be about double ($51k). What I've learned is that it is best to get a state job that has defined salaries statewide. They have to set the salary to be a living wage in the most expensive place (Seattle). If you work on the east side of the state, that same salary makes you a wealthy individual.

I apologize for my generalization. Perhaps I should consider moving further north.

As I recall, 5 years ago $250,000 a year was "middle income".

I know that 'cause a former management consultant CEO told me. (and you too).

Yeah, the six-figure income thing is the least interesting part of this whole story. It must be interesting having a job that involves defending earth against something that might not exist.
