Semi-rumor: Trump demanding that Time-Warner sell CNN

...before he signs off on the AT&T + TW merger:

The sale of CNN, which President Donald Trump has fiercely criticised as a broadcaster of “fake news”, is just one of the demands being made by the US antitrust authority in order to sign off on the deal, those involved in the talks said.

AT&T is opposed to selling the TV network and is preparing to take the Trump administration to court, arguing the deal with Time Warner does not pose any competition violations.

It’s all about CNN,” said one person with direct knowledge of the talks between the company and the DOJ, adding that the regulator made it clear to AT&T that if it sold CNN the deal would go through.

Other than sheer size, there's no legitimate antitrust angle here. AT&T is not in content, and is barely into delivery of such content. And the DOJ allowed Comcast to buy NBC, a nearly identical situation.

It's hard to see this as anything other than a naked abuse of power by Trump against a legitimate news organization.

A pox on both entities.

Edit: I don't literally mean a pox on the president so, please, don't notify the FBI. It's just a bromide.

Maybe Jeff Bezos should offer to buy CNN.

Or, they agree to dump CNN journalists and reporters and mimic Fox news

BTW, I am reminded that Fox was once supposedly pursuing TW (which might have had genuine antitrust, if not fairness doctrine ramifications), but they made such a piss-poor offer for TW to join the Borg that TW told them to go pound sand and it never got close to the point that the DOJ would have expressed their opinion. This didn't stop "Tuna Amobi" (who was actually not a single-celled fish, but rather an equity analyst at Standard and Poors) from opining at the time:

Quote

“At the end of the day, no one has any illusions that there are any kinds of conditions that can be imposed that will fully rein in the ability of these companies to exact their market power”

But liberal-bastion AT&T buying TW? This can not stand!

Maybe Roger Ailes is still looking for a new network. O'Reilly could use some work, too. I'll be both of them are tired of working the window during peak McFlurry season.

It's a crappy deal for America if the deal goes through. AT&T will have content and distribution. The Comcast-NBC deal also should not have happened. Let's please not normalize this anticompetitive behavior.

If Trump wants to hurt AT&T over what he obsesses with CNN "fake news," I don't care. It's ironically stupid on his part, but would be good for the country. Even if it's for reasons he doesn't intend.
