Panama ambassador resigns

Says he took an oath to serve the President but he can no longer serve him...so he is resigning.

We don't swear oaths to officeholders in this government. He is mischaracterizing whatever he signed, but I admire his integrity.

45 will call him so. And in the article I thought it said his instructors told him PRESIDENT ...if he could no longer serve resign which is what he did. I may have written it wrong. sorry.

Nope, Suzanne - I read the article and he misspoke. It's true that if you can't carry out the President's political agenda, you can't serve in the foreign service. But that's more a matter of a 'condition of employment' than a sworn oath.

Oathbreaking carries some of the heaviest penalties levied (when treasonous, death). It shouldn't be invoked lightly.
