Good of Obama. Michelle doesn't look like Michelle. Nice picture but not of Michelle IMO.

Very very different. GOOD !

And sadly these portraits will NEVER be put in the White House as long as ugly white men run things.

I think both portraits are profoundly beautiful and moving. I like this article because it focuses on the historic significance of these two artists and their styles.
There is also information about the symbolism behind the dress Michelle is wearing.

I don't particularly care for either.

The official portrait should be traditional IMO. Something that will stand up to time, it should not be a style that will be seen as a passing fad. Warhol and Picasso were masters, but I wouldn't want an official portrait done by either.

These ARE traditional portraits. But they capture their subjects in the context of the social/cultural/political era in which they live. Which is exactly what will make them interesting in the future.

What's not traditional is the subjects; their skin color and the roles they held, and hold. I love that Amy Sherald uses shades of gray for skin tones - it suggests the complexities of the multiple worlds people like the Obamas have to navigate.

The painting of Barack captures the face well, much better than the one of Michelle. The composition with the leaves is a little odd. It wouldn't fit in most decor and it reminds me of the Simpsons shot where Homer fades into the shrubs.

I LOVE them

only thing I would say is that Michelles face should have been pushed a bit so the likeness was firm and solid..A little bit of contrast in shadow vs overall skin tone would have kicked it over for me..Her face is submitting to the level of detail and contrast in the dress..It's close, but not quite there for me and could have been handled so the feel and spirit of the painting wouldn't suffer or change...of course it needs to be seen in person..

Otherwise..how refreshing!

They're interesting, if a little strange. I have a big problem with Michelle's portrait in that the face doesn't look like her at all.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

The Obamas chose the artists. If you look at the artists' previous work, these paintings are exactly what one would expect from them. I must assume that the Obamas were anticipating these portraits to look like this when they requested these particular artists, and that they got portraits that looked like they wanted them to.

PS: Amy Sherald earned her M.F.A. in painting at the college where I used to work. I never met her as far as I can remember.

The OP link discusses other portraits in the gallery where these are headed. More than a few of the portraits are not the usual stuffy affair associated with such things.

Not one of Amy Sherald's better works IMHO. For a well known personage the likeness should be truer, more realistic; so that a century or more from now viewers will see what Obama actually looked like.

Yes. Sherald's other work shows a range of dimension and definition in the faces, and this portrait would have benefitted from a bit more of Michelle Obama's individual character.

Yeah, I'd put him with that Frederick Douglass guy, "who’s done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice."

....and having a President that can speak well and thoughtful and not just thinks about himself......same goes for 1st Lady, her platform is supposed to be 'bullying' but have not anything done about it [ and she steals speeches from previous 1st Lady ]........

The White House Dumbfs will go down in history as the biggest smash hit since The Beverly Hillbillies

I'm somewhat ambivalent about the portraits.
