"How party demographics are changing because of Trump"

I'll admit that I'm a fan of most of Steve Kornacki's demographic statistical geek-outs on MSNBC. I think this recent one is pretty good (about 3:20 long):

Wow, if that keeps up the blue wave is going to be a tsunami in 20 years.

Implies the dems won’t screw the pooch in some way. That’s still a risk.

The latter is not just a risk, it will happen.

The Republicans early in the Bush II era were trying to appeal to the Hispanic vote with significant success. But the Republicans couldn't help themselves because their base was made up of racist, xenophobic bigots and the allure of locking in that vote was simply too great. They will change with the times and campaign for the greater demographic vote even while legislating the continued transfer of wealth from those who have little to those who have much, the one core principle they cannot change.

However, many of the groups that are identifying as overwhelmingly Democrat have notoriously low voting turnout. Having 100% of Polka-Dotted, young birdwatchers identifying as Democrats doesn't matter if they do not vote on election day. What matters is who actually votes and the average Republican is far more likely to actually vote than the average Democrat. That is what needs to change if there is going to be a wave, much less a tsunami. Further it has to last for multiple election cycles, not just one or two.

Compulsory voting.

I don't support compulsory voting, but I would support universal compulsory election attendance IF:
  1. In-person and mail-in voting options are available to all
  2. Those who choose not to attend a polling place or submit a ballot can pay a nominal fine instead
  3. Registration is regularized and automated to reduce barriers to access
