SCOTUS says purging voters is fine

5-4 along party lines, SCOTUS upheld Ohio's law purging voters if they had not exercised their constitutional right in six years.

I guess there is a time limit to your citizenship. Care to bet on the gerrymandering decision? I'll give 5-4 odds.

Well ya know, it takes soo much effort maintaining the records. There's all that staring at the hard disks and whatnot. Costs money! Effort!

The problem is easily solved by ousting the GOPers from state legislatures and putting in Americans.

I'm not terribly upset about this. You're talking about 'self disenfranchisement'.

Because I'm not a 'fair weather voter'... I vote all the damn time.

I'd rather see an Aussie solution... voting is obligatory.

Voting is going to become harder in the coming years. Registration efforts will be seen as political, not civic, activities. This bodes poorly for democratic government.

Notice how when we finally got around to cleaning up the registration lists in the name of preserving Democracy, we got Trump.

Voting registration drives have been party driven for several decades now. Sorry.

It should only be in the power of everyone to do so easily. Those of us who have the resources to get to the polls and identify ourselves easily often fail to appreciate how difficult it is for many people to vote.

As identification laws become more onerous, more people without the resources to jump through these bureaucratic hoops will fail to vote and then lose their registration.

Under the guise of preventing [nearly nonexistent] fraud, the government is making it more difficult for legitimate voters to vote. Who gets cut out? the poor, the disabled, the people of minority and non-favored demographics. And it's just a first step.

I would love to see the Aussie solution as long as it included the social resources to facilitate voting by those who find access difficult. I don't see that happening, though.

They might not be a party, but many other voter registration drives have been party driven. And it is not something that just goes back several decades, it goes back almost to the beginning of this country.

I'm still waiting for the findings of Pres. Trump's promised Voter Commission.

I'm soon to vote in Oregon for the first time.

"Oregon conducts all mail elections, eliminating the need for in-person early voting"

"Oregon automatically registers eligible citizens to vote when they go to a government agency, like the DMV"

"If requested, election workers will bring an electronic tablet and portable printer to the home of a voter with a physical disability to assist with voting. Voters who are unable to sign their name due to a physical disability may use a signature stamp cross or mark to sign."

"Oregon has the most convenient voting system in the country. Since adopting vote-by-mail, Oregon consistently ranks as a national leader in voter turnout.
Registered voters receive a ballot two to three weeks before an election, giving time to research issues or candidates.
Voters also receive an official ballot to complete and insert into the security envelope which is placed in the ballot return envelope and signed by the voter. The ballot return envelope can be stamped and mailed or dropped off at any official drop box across the state. If a voter casts their ballot after the Wednesday before an election, the ballot should be left at a drop box site to ensure it's counted."

[sos.oregon.gov]

Seems like a good setup.

Seems like a good setup.

Only if you want the greatest number of enfranchised citizens to vote.

So, no good for the GOP, then.
