Boris Johnson resigns as foreign secretary

......Senior Conservative becomes third minister to walk out over Theresa May’s Brexit plan

Boris Johnson has resigned as foreign secretary, becoming the third minister in 24 hours to walk out of the government rather than back Theresa May’s plans for a soft Brexit.

The prime minister hammered out a compromise with her deeply divided cabinet in an all-day meeting at Chequers on Friday, but after consulting friends and allies since, Johnson decided he could not promote the deal.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The prime minister thanks Boris for his work.”

After the Chequers summit, it emerged that Johnson had referred to attempts to sell the prime minister’s Brexit plan as ‘polishing a turd’.

His resignation follows that of the Brexit secretary, David Davis, and his No 2 at the Department for Exiting the EU, Steve Baker.

As the flamboyant public face of the Vote Leave campaign, Johnson’s departure will deepen the sense of crisis around May, and increase the chances that she could face a vote of no confidence.

The prime minister was due to address her backbench MPs in Westminster at 5.30pm, in an atmosphere becoming increasingly febrile. If 48 MPs write letters of no confidence to the chair of the backbench 1922 Committee, Graham Brady, May will face a vote of no confidence.

Many of the prime minister’s supporters believe she would win such a contest, but if she lost, May would face a leadership challenge, with Johnson among the potential candidates.

In Davis’s resignation letter, he said he believes May’s proposal for a UK-EU free trade area governed by a “common rule book”, “hands control of large swathes of our economy to the EU and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense”.

Brexiters have also been angered by what Baker told the BBC was “childish” briefing from No 10 over the treatment of pro-Brexit ministers at Chequers..... resigning...........?!

May will be done as PM within a week.

I really like the British parliamentary system, it doesn't put up with ineptness for long.

I'm not sure May is inept - she was tasked with the impossible job of actually implementing the Right's wet dream of Brexit in the real world...and it couldn't be done without disaster.

I suspect that these uber-right-wing members of her government (well, the bright ones anyway - not sure about Boris) are taking the opportunity to jump off this ship before it finally runs up against the shoals of reality. They can then say (as right-wingers tend to do) that the problem was not that it was a horrible idea in the first place (which it was), but rather that May was insufficiently conservative in it's implementation. Conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed.

If this brings down her government (which it probably will), and if Labor improbably finds itself in power, they really ought to push for a second referendum so that Britain can get beyond this nonsense and back to actual governing.

Edit: From my lips to Boris's. You couldn't make this stuff up:

From Anne Applebaum, WaPo, today:

Quote no point...have they or any of their Brexiteer colleagues offered what might be described as a viable alternative plan. That is because there isn’t one.

Or, to be more precise, there isn’t one... that corresponds to the ludicrous promises they made. They cannot come up with something that, on the one hand, avoids any jurisdiction of European courts of any kind; avoids any payments into a European budget; avoids all membership in a European customs union and allows Britain to do trade deals with other countries; while, at the same time, keeps supply chains running smoothly; keeps the Irish border open; preserves tariff-free trade with Europe; and imposes no costs on anybody — and all of this by next October in order to leave the following March. It just cannot be done.

The only deal they can genuinely the no-deal deal...Because this would cause major economic disruption, none of the Brexiteers wants to put his or her name on it. And so they leak to the newspapers, complain about the prime minister — and, now, resign.

The rats have discovered, finally, that their ship is incapable of staying afloat...and while diving off, they complain that their captain spent too much effort trying to make lifejackets rather than sailing their imagined majestic vessel the way they promised their deluded supporters.
