A lot of people seem to think this is fine. Fortunately city officials don't.

Police Chief Eliot Isaac has opened an investigation, Acting City Manager Patrick Duhaney told City Council members.

"There needs to be a complete investigation," said Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman, chairman of council's Law and Public Safety Committee. "It's hard to understand why an 11-year-old would be tased. I expect answers in 24 hours."

An off-duty officer working security at the Spring Grove Village Kroger was investigating several young girls accused of stealing from the store, police said. The officer approached the 11-year-old but she ignored the officer and continued to walk away, according to police. The officer struck the girl in the back with the Taser.

The girl was arrested on charges of theft and obstructing official business. She was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center for evaluation and released to a parent's custody.

So they are investigating why the officer's service gun wasn't used instead.

If the cop grabs her, it's #metoo.

No win situation. What was an 11 y.o. shoplifting from Krogers, anyway? Bubblegum?

Few things here, first of all no valid reason to put hands on the kid at all.

It is not a crime to conceal merchandise while you're in a store. It's only shoplifting if you leave the store without paying. The girl was still inside the store, she had not shoplifted. No legal reason to detain her at all and she was not required to talk to this man who approached her, who was working as a security guard, not a cop at the time.

When kids this young are caught stealing they are usually just handed over to their parents, not charged with anything.

Also - Unless responding to a threat of danger, it's not safe to fire a taser in an area like a retail store. The cop put other people at risk, for no good reason.

Hope her family gets a big settlement from the city and the cop is fired.

Tasers have turned out to be such a bad idea. They should get rid of them. Cops only seem to use them on people who are elderly, infirm, or young. Anybody who probably should be tased is shot dead instead, thereby rendering the point of tasers moot.

Shouldn't this be titled "Annals of a Police State"?

San Antonio, TX (in the old city)

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing."
-- Edmund Burke
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." Theodore Roosevelt (1918)
