These awful cases of sexual abuse by priests and higher-up members of the Catholic clergy around the world continue to be breaking news after more than 20 years. Even as last month Pennsylvania accuses 300 priests and over 1000 victims.

Pope Francis accepted the resignation of West Virginia’s bishop on Thursday and ordered an investigation into claims he sexually harassed adults.

The news about Michael J. Bransfield came as the pontiff began a closed-door meeting in his private study with four US bishops and cardinals to address the church’s wave of sexual abuse crises, including a cover-up scandal that even implicated the pope himself.

Bransfield was investigated in 2007 for an alleged groping incident and he was also implicated in court testimony in a 2012 Philadelphia priest sex abuse case. He denied the claims and continued with his ministry until he offered his resignation last Thursday, as required, when he turned 75.

The former bishop, who was a major fundraiser for the Vatican via the Pennsylvania-based Papal Foundation, will be temporarily replaced by the archbishop of Baltimore, William E. Lori.

Lori will also handle the investigation — and opened a hotline for tips about Bransfield.

No details about the allegations were revealed yet and Bransfield’s ministry, the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, said they had “no idea” where he was.
