New Zealand gits er done

It’s possible, folks.

Less than a month after 50 Muslim worshipers in the city of Christchurch were fatally shot in terrorist attacks on two mosques, New Zealand passed a law banning most semiautomatic weapons on Wednesday - a measure supported by all but one of Parliament’s 120 lawmakers.

A few exceptions:

Quote

Some semiautomatic guns will still be allowed, including .22 caliber rifles with magazines holding less than 10 rounds, and shotguns with internal magazines that hold no more than five rounds.

Adequate for hunters, and still potentially lethal to people, but it’s going to make large scale mass shootings like we (and Kiwis) have seen in the past difficult-to-impossible.

Two group exceptions:

Quote

...commercial pest-control businesses and for licensed collectors of guns, or those who want to keep particular guns as heirlooms or mementos. Collectors will be required to remove a part, making the weapons nonoperational, and store that part at a different location.

Australia did something similar after a mass shooting in 1996, and since then:

Quote

“While 13 gun massacres (the killing of 4 or more people at one time) occurred in Australia in the 18 years before the NFA, resulting in more than one hundred deaths, in the 14 following years (and up to the present), there were no gun massacres.

“In the seven years before the NFA (1989-1995), the average annual firearm suicide death rate per 100,000 was 2.6 (with a yearly range of 2.2 to 2.9); in the seven years after the buyback was fully implemented (1998-2004), the average annual firearm suicide rate was 1.1 (yearly range 0.8 to 1.4).”

“In the seven years before the NFA, the average annual firearm homicide rate per 100,000 was .43 (range .27 to .60) while for the seven years post NFA, the average annual firearm homicide rate was .25 (range .16 to .33).”

“[T]he drop in firearm deaths was largest among the type of firearms most affected by the buyback.”

BTW, to those who say that people will just use (far-less-deadly) knives/etc instead, the overall homicide rate in Australia has also decreased, to 1 per 100,000 (2013-2014), the lowest in 25 years.

Ours (same time period) is over 5 per 100,000.

Five. Times. Higher. Why do we put up with this?

I bet New Zealand's NRA is pissed!

Oh wait, no they're not.

“N.R.A. N.Z. looks after long-range precision target shooting, up to 1,000 yards,” said the group’s chairman, Ross Mason. “There’s no service rifle or military rifle shooting within the discipline, as opposed to the N.R.A.” in the United States, “which looks after all the disciplines and seems to be the political arm of the organization as well.”

The New Zealand organization has considered a name change to avoid being associated with the American group."

Of course, we have the second amendment, which was a pretty good idea for 1783, but times change unless you don't want them to.

Yes, pdq, New Zealand gits er done....calls for global censorship...
Quote

New Zealand's prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, has taken the position that it's time for social media giants to start acting like the media companies they've disrupted. "They are the publisher, not just the postman," she said.

She was joined by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who called on social media companies to implement better protections against terrorism and hate speech on their platforms and asked Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to make it a major point of discussion during the next G20 summit.

New Zealand's three major internet service providers also asked Facebook, Twitter, and Google to take part in an "urgent discussion" industry-wide to prevent the spread of harmful content.

And a growing number of New Zealand companies say they are considering a boycott of Facebook advertising in the wake of the attack. In a statement, the country's ad council said: "We challenge Facebook and other platform owners to immediately take steps to effectively moderate hate content before another tragedy can be streamed online."
Today it is somebody else's "hate speech", tomorrow it will be your hate speech that will be censored...

Max - alas quite true. Freedom Riders were silenced and murdered for daring to talk about civil rights in this country in the 60's. And even now people are being officially silenced and executed for daring to talk about civil rights in a LARGE number of countries. China. Pretty much ALL of the Islamic countries. Etc.

And of course in the US the call of "fake news" is a method to silence opposition by gaslighting the population. The use of Goebbel's "Big Lie" approach is still active and getting worse.

and a perfect example of this are couple of fascist trolls, on this side, trying actively to silence inconvenient OPs, photobombing repeatedly treads dealing with subkects they cannot argue....

PWI again.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
