US deficit soars to $691 billion, expected to top $1 trillion this year
[thehill.com]

The federal deficit in the first six months of the 2019 fiscal year reached $691 billion, according to new federal data, eclipsing the full-year deficits from 2015-2017.

The data released by the Treasury Department projects that deficits will reach $1.1 trillion by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30.

The spike in the deficit is largely the result of the GOP tax plan, which was projected to add $1.9 trillion to the deficit over a decade, and bipartisan legislation to increase spending.

US deficit soars to $691 billion, expected to top $1 trillion this year

The spike in the deficit is largely the result of the GOP tax plan, which was projected to add $1.9 trillion to the deficit over a decade, and bipartisan legislation to increase spending.

This was from 2018:

Quote

The federal budget deficit swelled to $779 billion in fiscal year 2018, the Treasury Department said on Monday, driven in large part by a sharp decline in corporate tax revenues after the Trump tax cuts took effect.

The deficit was $666B in 2017, up from $587B in Obama’s last year. So far Trump is on track to increase the deficit for 3 straight years (and counting), in a strong economy.

I don’t know what sort of wishful thinking came up with the $1.9 trillion-over-10-years number. I fear it’ll be well more than that.

"I'm going to cut the deficit".

Two years later....

"I declare TRADE WAR !"
"I declare Tax Cuts !" (For businesses and really rich folk)
"I declare MORE Spending on stuff I want ! Like getting rid of Brown People !"

Deficit skyrockets.

"It's Obama's fault !"

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I thought the new corporate tax structure was going to bring all that sheltered capital home from abroad and make up the difference. You mean it's not? Did some shady NYC real estate con man sell us a bill of goods??

Not to worry. During the campaign Trump said he would eliminate the national debt by the end of his eight years as president. Just give him another term - he'll get it done. Just believe in him.

Raise the minimum age for Social Security to 92 (full retirement at an even 100)
Medicare is restricted to only those who have never taken a sick day.
Medicaid is a single box of (generic) bandaids
and the first 100k is taxed at 40%

problem solved.

Him: Stop giving money to countries that hate us

Her: Go door-to-door of people on welfare and confiscate their big-scree TVs

But doesn’t apply to those who made more than that.

I’m late to this thread but: Never forget, deficits and the debt only matter when Democrats are in power.
