Yikes

Quote

When Charles Rhines, a gay man, was convicted of murdering Donnivan Schaeffer in January 1993, the jurors at his trial in South Dakota were tasked with deciding whether he would serve life in prison without the possibility of parole or be sentenced to death. During deliberations, some jurors wondered if life in prison would be punishment at all, suggesting that years in a men’s prison might not be a hardship for a man who is gay. The jurors sentenced him to death.

I wonder if that is not cause for a new trial.

likely not a cause for a new trial as the report points at sentencing issues, not the verdict. It is more likely that his sentencing will either be overturned or a new hearing will take place.

Supreme Court denied cert. The state will kill him with impunity.

Jesus, that was a depressing article. Not only regarding the person in question; the various quotes cited in the article from juries in past cases were so disheartening.

Very tragic, the attitudes so many in our society carry toward their neighbors.

Very tragic, the attitudes so many in our society carry toward their neighbors.

Even more tragic, the way that those attitudes are translated into death for LGBTQ people.

The attitude is the tip of the iceberg that is this problem.

Was implied in my statement.
