FCC, and apparently Congress too, are just about “done” re: robocalls

Note that there will be a public input portion to ask (the obvious) if they should additionally compel phone companies to legitimize Caller ID once more (i.e. squash spoofing).

If the increase in calls to my phone in recent years is any indication, it is as the article says, on the rise. And they’re acting on the resulting rise in complaints. Almost as how a government should work.

Spoofing should never have been allowed in the first place. The telecom companies make money off the traffic so they don't care. Maybe some FCC higher up lost his inheritance when Grandma wired her entire estate to some bogus IRS scammer, and NOW they care.

Your phone company is free to charge you for this benefit.

Pretty much anywhere else in the world, calls made to a cell phone are paid for by the caller, the exact same model as landlines have always been. Here in the backwards US, cell calls are illogically paid by the call receiver, meaning that you get billed for the actions of the spammer. That is why robocalls are not even an issue in places like Europe. The spammers would have to pay massive wireless charges to make robocalls. Here in the US they bill you for their robocalls.

Why you ask? Well, because the telecoms make more money the more caller traffic there is. They don't want to change.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Everyone likes to make money. But here, we have only a couple telecoms which are lightly regulated. And so they run free.
