Top immigration official says ICE is ready to deport 1 million undocumented immigrants
[www.cbsnews.com]

The Trump administration's top official at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said immigration authorities are ready to identify, detain and eventually deport approximately one million undocumented immigrants with pending removal orders.

"They're ready to just perform their mission, which is to go and find and detain and then deport the approximately one million people who have final removal orders," Acting USCIS Director Ken Cuccinelli said on "Face the Nation" Sunday, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Homeland Security branch charged with removal operations.

Cuccinelli, an immigration hardliner who took the helm of the agency last month, said it is within ICE's discretion to determine who among those with final orders of deportation will be targeted in operations, suggesting the full pool of approximately one million immigrants might not face deportation after all.

"They've been all the way through the due process and have final removal orders. Who among those will be targeted for this particular effort ... is really just information kept within ICE at this point," he added. "The pool of those with final removal orders is enormous."

They are specifically targeting families with children for deportation, meant to be a deterrent. In the past the priority deportations were violent criminals. Not anymore.

It's sick.

There are over 11 million undocumented people in the US right now who could potentially be subject to "final removal orders." This administration would like to remove them all but will settle for a million, which would well exceed Obama's deportation record of 420,000 in one year.

Nothing would get the MAGA rally people more frothed up than that.

Calling these people "undocumented" is also crazy.

They're documented.

They just don't have the "right" documentation.

The reason that ICE can find them is that these people have registered their addresses as they earnestly tried to work their way through a deliberately confounding bureaucracy.

Most have overstayed visas or been denied asylum or have lawful residency but due to problems with the court system have not been notified of court dates and as a result have had ex parte proceedings against them. Many have been allowed to stay pending decisions by boards or courts and have been reporting regularly to ICE.

This is a gross betrayal of fundamental principles of justice.

Unauthorized immigrants?

Also not the right word.

Many are "authorized" so long as they continue to report their addresses to ICE or to courts. They lack the "right" authorization to stay when ICE decides to revoke permission.

For a lot of these folks, ICE smashing open the door to grab them and deport them will be the first notice they've had that they no longer have permission to stay in the country.

Best to just say immigrants then. That's actually what the Associated Press Stylebook has called for since 2013:

illegal immigration Entering or residing in a country in violation of civil or criminal law. Except in direct quotes essential to the story, use illegal only to refer to an action, not a person: illegal immigration, but not illegal immigrant. Acceptable variations include living in or entering a country illegally or without legal permission.

Except in direct quotations, do not use the terms illegal alien, an illegal, illegals or undocumented.

Do not describe people as violating immigration laws without attribution.

Specify wherever possible how someone entered the country illegally and from where. Crossed the border? Overstayed a visa? What nationality?

People who were brought into the country as children should not be described as having immigrated illegally. For people granted a temporary right to remain in the U.S. under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, use temporary resident status, with details on the program lower in the story.

I'm no apologist for the administration, but to be clear: the announced imminent raids are explicitly aimed at immigrants who have already been issued deportation orders by an 'immigration court' (administrative court, not judicial). That's not to say that these people should be deported, but if they've been reporting to ICE they likely know about their deportation orders.

Some of these immigrants aren't authorized to be here, and ICE would say that they don't have the staff to find, capture, and remove all of them by force. As a result, lots of folks with deportation orders continue to work, support families, pay taxes, raise children, etc. without raising an eyebrow, because to most people they know they're just hardworking neighbors.

I would argue that our system of deeming immigrants 'authorized' to be present in the U.S. is so broken as to require wholesale replacement, but that requires acts of Congress that aren't politically possible right now. In the interim, I think civil disobedience should play a part in protecting vulnerable immigrants, mostly by citizens risking arrest by providing material support, physical refuge, transportation, etc. to families being targeted by ICE. Obviously, citizens have to gauge their own capacity and willingness to take risks for vulnerable others, and those choices are individual.

Like leaving water jugs in the desert to save lives? A felony.

A normal patrol consists of a lot of driving — with gas paid for by the volunteers. Teams of two drive around certain neighborhoods to look for ICE vehicles. Specifically, they look for tell-tell signs like parked cars with tinted windows, usually clean, mostly American-made, and always with someone sitting in the driver’s seat. If you look through the front windshield, which is also tinted, you can sometimes see a steel mesh cage in the backseat, Abundiz noted.

If they find a car, and verify that it belongs to an immigration agent, the volunteers will livestream a feed on social media and alert locals about their presence. The goal is to keep undocumented immigrants whom ICE may be targeting away from the area.
