I cannot believe the brouhaha over a Black Ariel

What the hell is wrong with people? A mermaid is not a real creature. It can be any freaking color that the casting director wants it to be.

I saw a link to the Instagram post by Freeform (never heard of Freeform before, maybe because I have no children?) and after I read the post I made the big mistake of looking at comments. [www.instagram.com]

Good grief. Is this 1955?

Are you actually, actually surprised by the fact that White Racist Cultural Defenders would make a fuss about a Disney property aimed at shaping girlhood/maidenhood? So surprised you cannot believe it? I don't think that you are.

I guess I keep hoping that I will wake up in a world where people like that howl into their pillows and leave the rest of us alone.

And before that was Fox Family after being purchased from CBN. CBN still has a long term contract for airtime to show the 700 Club, Disney tried to buy it out but CBN refused the offer.

My favorite line - that means Ursula has to be played by a white woman, who else has the power to steal a black woman's voice?!

I would guess that every area of the world where a culture has lived/traveled on the sea has mer-people stories. I'm not really surprised people are upset, just disappointed it's turned into such a big fake news item.

It would be a surprise if no one was upset. I don't think it's realistic to think that in a time when every single human can express a thought globally that we can't gather a goodly number of any kind of response to just about anything. It doesn't necessarily mean that's how the larger body of non-black humanity feels. We'd need polls to get a real feel about that. Over a movie. It really isn't worth getting upset over. They can't stop it from happening. So no real problem.

Thanks for the link, I learned something. Fascinating. It's interesting that vastly different cultures can have similar beliefs/ideas.

On the other hand a black friend of mine feels that it is lazy tokenism on the part of Disney to take an established and well-loved cartoon character and "black-wash" (his term, not mine) them for the live action version of the film rather than come up with an original afro-centric story or fable and make a film of that.

Personally I don't care because I never liked the story to begin with, having seen a much darker, scarier, and probably more true to the original story cartoon version of it in the 1970s on TV* and I have yet to watch the Disney animated version.

*I looked but could find no evidence of this version online. It was drawn in the more realistic style of the Chuck Jones version of Rikki Tikki Tavi and the Richard Williams version of A Christmas Carol ([www.youtube.com]) and would have come out at about the same time.

Resist the Thought Police- George Orwell's book 1984 was meant as a warning, not a "How To" guide.

Lie to me if you must, but don't lie to me and insult my intelligence in the same sentence.
