Trump’s July Fourth event and weekend protests bankrupted D.C. security fund, mayor says

Mayor goes begging to be reimbursed.

for what? Oh a little thing called SECURITY.

"... used to protect the nation’s capital from terrorist threats and provide security at events such as rallies and state funerals."

Instead, the nation got covfefe about ramparts getting rammed by a Continental Army seizing the airports.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason 45 did this was to hurt D.C. economically. They didn't vote for him.

Yeah, but what about the economic impact of all those knock-off MAGA sales at the street vendors?

Congress would arrange for payment, not the white house - right?

Even before the event, it became widely known as "Trump's" July 4th event. His administration wanted the pomp, the circumstance, the sale of tickets, the military and so on. Congress had nothing to do with any of the excess.

The mayor is making the people responsible for all of that. Note that she's also requesting Trump's campaign reimburse the city of expenses related to the Inauguration ... for which he still owes.

But paying what you owe doesn't make for good TV, so he likely will ignore it.

Except it was a campaign event (duh). So his campaign needs to write the check. Although they are probably gonna have trouble after all those checks they have to write to Epstein's "Lolita team".

Technically, it was not. I'm curious about this - congress pays or arranges for paying bills that the gov't generates - right? How or why the bill was generated doesn't matter - right?

He'll probably argue that he raised the rates at his DC hotel for the event to help out Washington DC via their hotel tax. And he didn't even get a "thank you".

This is not a news story "worrying" about D.C. finances per se. It's merely an additional illustration of the president's disregard for paying what he owes, to anyone.

Yes it is "federal money" but both Congress and the White House apparently need to effectively act. And "Congress" doesn't have one central person or office who is the focus of "Congress."

The mayor knows that making a public plea to the White House causes them to either publicly act or publicly ignore it.

Speaking of which, the White House's position on the inaugural costs is to simply lie about it.

Quote
from the story
White House officials have said that the District agreed to use unspent money in the emergency fund to pay for inaugural costs, an assertion denied by the Bowser administration.

How do we know it's a lie? We know who is credible and who is not.

Congress may "get around to it" or they may be prodded to do so sooner. That's where White House influence (contribution) comes in. D.C. has already asked Congress for money. Congress may be intentionally dragging their feet to make Trump look bad. Or they may other stuff to do first. Or they may not have enough conservative support to spend the money. I don't know. Does it matter?

Quote
from the story
Congress and the White House have been placing less money in the account each year than the city is spending — in fiscal 2017, for example, $14.9 million was added to the fund while $24.4 million was spent.

We can speculate all day about why D.C. got a bankrupted account, if that helps. Or we can note that Trump's spectacle of embarrassment is expensive in real dollars, and that he doesn't show enthusiasm for recompense then, or now.
