Acosta makes it worse (press conference)

Trump has sent him out alone to defend himself, not seeing any allies step out publicly for him.

I think he made things worse with this press conference. His leniency to Epstein was in 2008, not 1978. His team also allowed the victims to be cast as prostitutes instead of as underage sex trafficking victims, which is outrageous.

Mr. Acosta said that times have changed, and that juries today are more understanding of victims in such cases. “Today our judges do not allow victim shaming by defense attorneys,” he said, and added that outrage by the victims was “entirely appropriate.”

“The point I’m trying to make is everything that the victims have gone through in these cases is horrific, and their response is entirely justified,” Mr. Acosta said. “At the same time, I think it’s important to stand up for the prosecutors of my former office and make clear that what they were trying to do was help these victims.”

even though it will be good to see another Trumpoid bite the dust, unless it helps to bring down the Orange Julius Caesar, then it's a fancy footnote.

However, there is one question:
Exactly how did a Federal prosecutor get appointed as Secretary of Labor?

A better question ... Exactly how did a Federal Prosecutor get so badly corrupted that he allowed a virulently rapacious pedophile to go under-punished ?

no big mystery there - he's a specialist in employment and labor law.

I really couldn't disagree more with the other statement and the casual disregard for the serious nature of this situation. Some things are ABOVE partisan politics and this is one of them. This and how immigrant families have been treated are by far the most egregious types of corruption that have occurred in Trump's administration.

Most of the other stuff is financial crime and power grabbing - it just doesn't exist in the same league as this.

I couldn't stand to watch the press conference. Did he try to justify hiding from the victims the sweetheart plea deal he gave Epstein. By law, the victims should have been informed of it:

A federal judge ruled that former federal prosecutor Alex Acosta, who is now President Trump’s labor secretary, violated the law by hiding a plea deal with serial sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein from dozens of his victims.

Judge Kenneth Mara ruled Thursday that Acosta and the Department of Justice violated the law by failing to confer with Epstein’s victims before agreeing to a 2008 plea deal that resulted in no criminal trial for Epstein and just 13 months in prison, CNN reported.

I really don't see how he could justify not following the law about conferring with the victims. Plus, that he didn't do so implies very strongly that he knew what he was doing was wrong and went out the way to hide it - to the point of breaking the law. But, hey, he's one of the good ol' boys that Trump favors so much, so, no big deal. Lady Justice is just another girl to be molested.

He went all lawyer speak when asked to explain why victims were not notified. He said it was to protect them in the event of future claims of restitution against Epstein. He also said everything was the fault of state prosecutors.

At the time of the case in Florida there were over 100 known victims. Julie Brown used that list to write her story and prosecutors in New York said they used the list to start the process of bringing new charges.
Acosta also blocked an FBI investigation into an international sex trafficking ring involving Epstein.

he was clearly doing a solid for his old attorney pals Kenneth Starr and Jay Lefkowitz at Kirkland Ellis, where he worked for about 15 years I believe. That is also William Barr's firm. it's normal for a prosecutor to work with attorneys who were former colleagues but in this case Acosta had them meet in a secret location, not at his office, which gives the idea he wanted to hide his role in the deal. I'm sure he did.
