The nothingness of Trump’s pledge to “do something” about gun violence

“In the aftermath of the attack, President Trump pledged to “do something about” online extremism. Speaking Monday, he said the government would “work in partnership with local state and federal agencies, as well as social media companies, to develop tools that can detect mass shooters before they strike.”

“By meeting with tech companies on Friday — a session Trump did not attend, opting instead for two fundraisers — the administration appeared to signal it’s in the early stages of trying to make good on the president’s pledge. White House officials also asked tech giants to submit their own recommendations in the coming weeks, the three sources said.”

Yep, just outsource it. Don’t even show up to the meeting. It will come as no surprise that had he attended the meeting, he would have been told his Minority Report-style fantasy isn’t feasible and would invade privacy.

**************

So what he did instead was give another presser on his way out the door to the Hamptons fundraiser, where he had this response to a question about what to say to kids fearful of now being in school:

“My message to young children going back to school is to go and really study hard and maybe be president of the United States or do something else that’s fantastic. They have nothing to fear, nothing to worry about.

In addition, we are in constant contact with states, with state government. They are really doing a great job. We have this so much better than it was two and a half years ago. Two and a half years ago, it was really not a good situation. I think we have a very, very good system right now.

That doesn’t mean that there’s not going to be some crazy person. But that’s what we want to do. We want to take the guns out of the hands of crazy, demented sick people."

So there you have it, kids. Nothing to see here, but wear those Kevlar backpacks just the same. We’ll keep looking for “crazy” people meantime, because that’s somehow more “effective” than looking for angry and hateful people.

I fear that the "do something" will evolve from anything to do with guns into requiring backdoors to encryption.

I will offer 10:1 odds on any bet up to $100 US that nothing substantial in regards to gun control gets through reconciliation and signed by President Vermin.

He removed Obama era regulations that made it harder for the mentally ill to buy guns. There is no way he will change that back.
