Ford confident of Nixon

On July 25, 1974, Vice President Gerald Ford told a Republican audience that the Watergate impeachment inquiry was in large part "an attempt to try and undo the election results of 1972 -- and don't you forget it."

Two weeks later, President Richard Nixon resigned.

Possibly you also saw Kruse’s tweet there as a response to something eerily similar McConnell just said, [mobile.twitter.com]

It’s as if none of these turds know or care about their own party’s history. To say nothing of curiously conflating impeachment with somehow “turning over” an election!

I wonder if anyone’s told Clinton she better be getting those pantsuits slicked up and ready if Trump goes soon, according to Mitch’s logic.

That's one of the GOP's main talking points against impeachment. Trump has said repeatedly that Dems are trying to take away Americans' right to vote.

Of course, impeachment is not "overturning an election."

The Ford quote is just a reminder that it took a long time for the GOP to turn against Nixon in '74 and it took the general public much longer than it has this time around.

It's right up there with the palace coup theory-of-the-week (or, weak.)

The difference is Nixon was told by his own party members that he would be impeached were a vote held.

That's not something anywhere ear happening with the current guy.

^^ Yes but Nixon wasn't told that until very near the end, and after the House acted with finality.

That didn't happen until the hearing were well underway and the tapes were discovered.

Republicans didn't desert Nixon until they had no other choice.

This is why we're all waiting for the whistleblower(s) to testify. They're our only credible connection to the Ukraine allegations anymore, other than what Volker's already said and the million incriminating things already announced.

Also, there was no talk radio that was 91% reactionary nor a Faux News nor the internet.
