No one comes to mind. There has to be someone.

McCain, with caveats, but he had the balls to face down McConnell when no one else would.

Before that, maybe Dole?

Senator Mac Mathias of Maryland. A great Senator and a good human being, from back when there was actually a moderate wing of the Republican Party. I am old enough to remember when one could step into a voting booth and make choices based on the individuals as opposed to the parties. Reagan started the downward tumble and Gingrich sealed the deal. Before that, the GOP didn't require that you sign a deal with the devil to run for office.

I was racking my brain because I knew there was another guy back in the day. That's who I was trying to think of. Thanks.

Well if holding elective office is a criteria, how about former Massachusetts Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor Elliot Richardson?

Connie Morella, a moderate GOP in the House consistently voted in by a predominantly Democratic district. She worked for everybody until the GOP targeted her in a primary and pushed her out. I never voted for the dumdum that took over.

On the nationally known stage, I'd go with Bob and Elizabeth Dole.

I really liked Kasich. His move to add Ohioans to Medicaid was in direct opposition to the Party, but what his state wanted and needed.

For years I was happy to vote for my GOP Congressman in W. MA. Silvio Conte served in the House for 32 years until he died from prostrate cancer at the age of 69 in 1991.

Edit: corrected his age

Any Republican that joined the "Contract With America" is eliminated in my opinion, so that disqualifies every Republican that was in national office in 1995 (Bob Dole and John McCain).

That makes it tough, anybody that voted to impeach Nixon, left office before 1995, and wasn't involved in: Anna Chennault, Watergate, (the following are Reagan-era) Iran-Contra, Department of Housing and Urban Development grant rigging, Lobbying scandal, EPA scandals, Savings & loan crisis, Operation Ill Wind, Wedtech Scandal.

That's actually not what happened to Connie. She ran as the GOP candidate through her final election in 2002, when Chris Van Hollen beat her in the general.

She won reelection year after year in her district because she was moderate and VERY focused on constituent services. As partisanship grew, though, holding onto a seat in a very blue district became untenable. Van Hollen is a gifted fundraiser and organizer, and parlayed his House seat into a bid for the Senate in 2016, which he won after Barbara Mikulski resigned.

At most I would rate Romney as governor as a neutral, not good enough to get a "positive". Even the MA health care he is known for was passed over his last minute vetoes of 8 sections he had agreed to earlier.

He backed out of that once he realized the WMD was a lie. They trusted the Cheney wrangled intel. He realized and supported Obama with every fiber. He's still a good guy.

I think that George Schultz had some very good qualities and policy positions.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this guy: [www.youtube.com]

While he's not a perfect person by any means, when is the last time a REAL Republican called Trump out?

It's nice to see someone with a media presence taking an opposing viewpoint. Herr Gropenfuhrer wasn't terrible, except for being a stooge for the power industry (cough*Enron*cough), possibly having his own stable of #metoo, and...
