At least 11 people were injured Sunday in an early-morning shooting in New Orleans’ French Quarter, the city’s famed tourist hotspot, police said in a news release.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, gunfire erupted at around 3:21 a.m. local time. There were officers in the vicinity of the incident.

happened after The Bayou Classic events.

'The Bayou Classicis more than a football game. This annual event is one of the country's greatest college sports rivalries, bringing the fans and alumni of Southern University and Grambling State University to New Orleans each November. A week of events featuring a parade, fan festival and battle of the bands culminates with Saturday's Bayou Classic football match-up.'

The shooting happened between 3:20 a.m. to 3:25 a.m. in the 700 block of Canal Street in New Orleans, according to New Orleans Police.

Officers who were already in place for the Bayou Classic football game responded immediately to the shooting after initially thinking they were being fired upon. The victims were taken to local area hospitals with 5 going to University Hospital and the other 5 going to Tulane Hospital. The last person was a walk-in patient. The 2 people who are in critical condition suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and a gunshot wound to the torso, respectively.

New Orleans Police confirm that they were within feet of the shooting but there were so many people around that it was hard to determine who was firing shots. They managed to detain an individual but it is unclear if that person had any involvement with the shooting.

Mayor Cantrell has issued a statement: [www.nola.com]

... word on the street is that some bystanders in the area knew what was about to happen, but didn't warn anyone (like the cops) ...
