Christianity Today: 'Trump Should be Removed from Office'

'Christianity Today, the key evangelical magazine founded by Billy Graham, calls for Trump's impeachment, describing him as "a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused."'

"according to the WaPo, the editorial got written this a.m. which would mean after one Congressman compared Trump to Jesus on trial yesterday, and after @realDonaldTrump decided to "joke" about John Dingell being in hell."

I was able to get through - the server is just VERY busy. It was a good opinion piece - I'd even call it apologetic. They want to be a non political site and a brief look around shows that to be true. BUT they feel that they had no choice but to speak up and risk upsetting a portion of their readership.

CT in general tries to hold against the pressure to go full fundy.

Pence is a straight arrow much more to the taste of socially conservative Christians than a NYC con man with three marriages, a hushed prostitute and a locker-room mouth. The fact that they refuse to dump him when they have Pence in the wings is another sign to me that they've been corrupted by political and moneyed conservatives.

Is this a crack in the voting block?

I posted this URL because the Twitter feed is iffy.

"The Democrats have had it out for him from day one"

Oh, the irony.

In their quest to "give evangelicals their due" they willingly looked the other way, not out of "patience" as stated. But out of cowardice or acquiescence. Sorry CT, you do NOT get to have it both ways here.

Do I criticize CT? Hmm, did they wait until it's been too late to say what they just said?

How very convenient for them. I don't doubt they mean well, but as leaders for their community, they still get a Grade = F.

I catch flak here for not acknowledging when people finally do come around and I'll willingly take that heat. But in reading this opinion piece I kept seeing mainly excuses for themselves.

-- they said zero about what he did wrong
-- they said Dems have "had it out for Trump," which goes a long way for deleting the allegations against the president as being serious. It was a sop to their base. It's treating criticism as "unfairness." Where have we heard that before (or, every day)?

Obviously I don't read CT often. For example, do they/have they criticized their founder's son, ever?

Franklin Graham is desperately trying to deny this damning editorial.

Oh, that Billy Graham

At first, Graham denied comments Haldeman made in his book, "The Haldeman Diaries" that Graham and Nixon had disparaged Jews in a conversation following a prayer breakfast in Washington D.C. on Feb. 1, 1972. Haldeman said Graham had talked about a Jewish “stranglehold” on the country.

''They're the ones putting out the pornographic stuff,'' Graham had said to Nixon. The Jewish ''stranglehold has got to be broken or the country's going down the drain,'' he continued.

Graham told Nixon that Jews did not know his true feelings about them.

''I go and I keep friends with Mr. Rosenthal (A.M. Rosenthal) at The New York Times and people of that sort, you know. And all -- I mean, not all the Jews, but a lot of the Jews are great friends of mine, they swarm around me and are friendly to me because they know that I'm friendly with Israel. But they don't know how I really feel about what they are doing to this country. And I have no power, no way to handle them, but I would stand up if under proper circumstances.''

I figure getting right about Trump is a good step for Graham's rehab. (Maybe this will get him out of Hell next to John Dingell.)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it."

Billy Graham 1981

Billy Graham 1981

Goldwater was worried the "preachers" would damage the party. "Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise"

You could say both sides wanted the relationship for the power the other could offer, and both are damaged as a result.

Love these quotes. Stealing.

San Antonio, TX (in the old city)

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." - Billy Graham 1981

"Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise" - Barry Goldwater

Rest of Goldwater quote. Google wants to just return this section. To spare me a www rabbithole, anyone know the larger context this is pulled from?

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”
