Roger Stone prosecutor quits case after DOJ says it will cut Trump ally’s recommended prison sentence
[www.cnbc.com]

A federal prosecutor in the criminal case against Republican operative Roger Stone dramatically quit the case Tuesday shortly after the Department of Justice said it will force prosecutors to cut their recommendation that the longtime ally of President Donald Trump servce as long as nine years in prison.

The resignation of Aaron Zelinsky as a special assistant U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., was announced in a footnote of a court filing notifying a judge that he was withdrawing as a prosecutor in Stone’s case. However, Zelinksy will remain a federal prosecutor in Maryland, where he has continued to work while prosecuting Stone.

“This Court is advised that the undersigned attorney has resigned effective immediately after this filing as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia,” the court filing said.

Marcy Murphy, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney’s Office of Maryland, said, “He’s always been in [here] in Maryland. He was assigned as a special assistant to Stone’s case.”

A spokesman for the Washington U.S. Attorney’s office and the DOJ did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the departure of Zelinsky, who earlier worked on special counsel Robert Mueller’s team of investigators in the probe of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Zelinsky did not respond to a request for comment.

On Monday night, the U.S. Attorney’s Office told the judge in a filing that Stone should get a prison term of seven to nine years when he is sentenced Feb. 20 for crimes related to lying to Congress about his contacts with WikiLeaks during the 2016 presidential election and his efforts to get an associate, comedian Randy Credico, to cover for his lies.

Zelinsky was one of four prosecutors who signed that sentencing memorandum.

I await Barr's judgment that this was unprofessional behavior, to be punished by demotion or dismissal.

There are no 'moral objections' in this Justice Department.

We can hope that the judge is still annoyed, ignores new recommendations, and gives Stone the nine years anyway.

” Soon after the revised recommendation was made, three prosecutors who worked on the case, Aaron S.J. Zelinsky, Jonathan Kravis and Adam Jed, a motion to withdraw from the case. Zelinsky and Kravis both resigned from the DC US attorney's office.”

WaPo is saying all four have withdrawn from the case; Aaron S.J. Zelinsky, Jonathan Kravis, Adam Jed and Mike Marando.

WaPo reports only Kravis resigning, CNN still reports Zelinsky and Kravis resigning.

Given Trump’s recently demonstrated propensity for punishing the disloyal, I wouldn’t be surprised if just withdrawing from the case will have the same effect as resigning.

Trump called the prosecutors "Mueller people..."

Of course he doesn't need to call the DOJ or speak to anyone directly, Barr knows what the leader wants and needs and he complies. How sad that someone like Barr joined the corrupt criminal enterprise that is the Trump administration. History won't be kind to either man.

From your linked article,

”... the four prosecutors who had worked on the trial, Aaron S.J. Zelinsky, Jonathan Kravis, Adam Jed and Mike Marando, filed a motion to withdraw from the case. Zelinsky and Kravis both resigned from the DC US attorney's office.”

Four withdrawals, two resignations.

Yeah, Hillary Clinton clearly suffered from a lack of investigation.
