Sure hope this one works out

TOKYO (Reuters) - Shares in Japanese company Fujifilm Holdings Corp (4901.T) were untraded due to a glut of buy orders after Kyodo news agency reported on Wednesday that China said the company’s Avigan drug works against coronavirus.

Avigan, an anti-flu drug, is manufactured by one of the company’s subsidiaries. Kyodo reported that Chinese scientists have verified the drug’s effectiveness against the novel coronavirus in testing.

I hope it does, that it is available in quantity, and is affordable.
But it is not approved by the FDA so it cannot be used in the US until that changes.

Of course, that's why I was sure to include "China says".

Avigan (aka Favipiravir) has its detractors. South Korea has decided against its use due to concerns about its efficacy and possible severe side effects.

Avigan has not only not shown efficacy during test studies but also there is not data on clinical trials conducted on patients," said Oh Myoung-don, an infectious disease expert. "The drug has also shown serious side effects, such as fetal deaths in animal studies.

No judgements towards this in particular, but one of the important tasks in all this will be separating out the pioneers, profiteers and politicians and agendas genuine and mercenary.

Seems like chloroquine is the most reliable treatment right now.

Business Insider on Chloroquine

”As dozens of drug companies rush into research projects to develop antibodies and other next-generation therapeutics, chloroquine stands out as a potentially simple, cheap, and scalable treatment, though we haven't yet seen data from any randomized clinical trials, the gold standard of medical research.

"If clinical data confirm the biological results, the novel coronavirus-associated disease will have become one of the simplest and cheapest to treat and prevent among infectious respiratory diseases," a group of French researchers wrote in a paper published on February 15 in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents.”

That doomed it right there. Pharma can't make money off of the pandemic by using a cheap, old drug. Its use will get discouraged by savvy pharma marketers.
