Sen. Rand Paul tests positive, is asymptomatic

Just hearing this on MSNBC. First member of US Senate to test positive and only got the test out of "abundance of caution," he has no symptoms. Doesn't know of any contacts with positive people but obviously he has. Says he is self-quarantining.

That's the worrisome thing. Asymptomatic but contagious people are wondering around everywhere. This virus has really learned how to hide.

Re: Sen. Rand Paul tests positive, is asymptomatic

Pity.

Kidding! Just kidding.

But yeah, I think/fear there may be a ton of asymptomatic potential-spreaders out there. I wish we had enough test kits to test a bunch of asymptomatic folks randomly, just to get a handle on what we're dealing with.

I presume the first batch of such folks may be the US Senate, since that particular group apparently has decided they can't self-isolate like mere mortals are expected to.

I wish ALL our leaders would have symptoms to learn some empathy.

I thought asymptomatic people didn't get tested.

Better stay away from your neighbor. He won't be too pleased if he gets it.

"Best way for the average American to get tested: sneeze on a rich person and wait for their results."

As our president reminded us, that's just the way of life.

Worse, he was out and about, socializing and WENT TO THE GYM this morning while he was waiting for the test results. NO ISOLATION.

It is a rare test indeed that is 100% sensitive and 100% specific.
If no symptoms and no risk factors, he may be a false positive.

He should not have been tested if he had no symptoms. Total BS going on.

He got his money moved out of the stock market in plenty of time. I'm sure he'll be alright.

Paul's chief of staff later clarified that he "decided to get tested after attending an event where two individuals subsequently tested positive for COVID-19, even though he wasn't aware of any direct contact with either one of them."

Still - he should not have been at the Senate gym, or anywhere except self-quarantining until he got his results. He's a physician. For pete's sake.

Also - he is at high risk due to his broken ribs last year, he had part of his lung removed.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., criticized Paul in a tweet, calling his gym visit "absolutely irresponsible."

"You cannot be near other people while waiting for coronavirus test results," she wrote. "It endangers others & likely increases the spread of the virus."

Paul suffered lung damage as a result of having his ribs broken during an altercation with a neighbor in 2017. Last year, he had part of his lungs removed. Paul's chief of staff told NBC News that the surgery puts the senator "in a higher-risk category as it relates to pulmonary issues."

His father, former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, who is also a doctor, last week referred to the coronavirus crisis as a "hoax." The pandemic has infected more than 300,000 people worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University

That would probably make a delicious soup.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I always tell people pushing gold "You can't eat gold if the economy truly collapses!" but maybe I'm wrong about that.

Game of Thrones Viserys got a taste of gold. Didn't work out too well for him, however.
