The US has abdicated our global leadership role in this pandemic

This makes me more sad than almost anything that has befallen our nation and world in this global catastrophe. We are simply absent from the places where solutions are being developed, and funded.

We'll be back when our leadership changes, but oh, the cost.

Whoever finds a cure, vaccine and tests will be the global leaders. Could be anyone at this point.

For the rest, didn't we used to have allies and stuff?

There won't be one company, person or country that discovers and produces a vaccine, it's a collaborative global effort. Many successful vaccines will be produced. We need to be part of the process of deciding how and where it gets distributed, and we're not. Not a zero sum game.

Trump will get out in front of the parade and claim credit for a cure or vaccine.

We already got bit by "Not created here" delays when it came to testing. It will happen again with the vaccine.

We are yet again witnessing history here. After 9/11 history came fast and furious and in some ways was familiar even to those of us who were a bit too young to have lived through the escalation of Vietnam.

But this has been a physical change with how our lives are lived and how our leadership could take the lead in helping the public though this with measured advice and, frankly, inspiring speeches. This is the political stuff that, handled well, gets you easily re-elected.

But this time it feels like a long slog to an ambiguous future with non-existent, and seemingly obstructionist leadership. It's weird to see history in the making, one odd day at a time and not good history. Instead it's car crash history. Oddly compelling destructionist history that you can't look away from and will be the fodder for countless analyses for decades to come.

We get to live through it and it will be well documented on the internet, hopefully for time immemorial.

A lot of this is due to corporations abandoning the US for manufacturing because of more restrictive labor and pollution laws. It has left us with no middle class. It seems to be all software companies and fast food/service economy. With no working base for the service economy (meat plants, farmers, restraunts) the economy will collapse.

The view from abroad:

Quote

The world has watched in horror as an American president acts not as the leader of the free world but as a quack apothecary recommending unproven “treatments.” It has seen what “America First” means in practice: don’t look to the United States for help in a genuine global crisis, because it can’t even look after itself.

Once there was the United States of the Berlin airlift. Now there is the image of the USS Theodore Roosevelt crippled by the virus, reports of the administration trying to take exclusive control of a vaccine being developed in Germany, and federal intervention to stop the commercial sale of personal protective equipment to Canada. The world has been turned on its head.

An excerpt from a piece by Kevin Rudd, former PM of Australia, in Foreign Affairs magazine.

If Trump is reelected, America’s reputation in the world may never recover.

Even if we oust Trump and his grifters, it's not certain we'll be able to repair the damage done domestically. As to world leadership that's never coming back. Once a superpower shows the world that, with just one election outcome, it can become unstable and unreliable the world looks for alternatives.

Don't count Dumbf out. There's plenty of wars to be waged between now and November. All he really needs to do is get out of bed in the morning… And don't count on Congress to do their jobs, either.

But keep that Trump Chump Change trickling down … Bread and Circuses.
