Trump says if 2nd wave hits, won't close country again......

....ugh....

....President Donald Trump on Thursday said “we are not closing our country” if the U.S. is hit by a second wave of COVID-19.

His comments come on the same day that the United States reported another 2.4 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week That brings the total of new unemployment claims to more than 38 million in nine weeks..

In reference to states like California which have not reopened as quickly as others Trump said, “I don’t think the people are going to stand for it.” Yet Texas, North Carolina and Arizona have reported spiking numbers of cases as they’ve moved into reopening......

......But Trump on Thursday remained confident in the country’s ability to deal with a resurgence.

“We are going to put out the fires. We’re not going to close the country,” Trump said. “We can put out the fires. Whether it is an ember or a flame, we are going to put it out. But we are not closing our country.”............

“New research from Columbia University epidemiologists offered one possible answer on Wednesday. If the same kind of social distancing had been in place seven days earlier, their study found, the United States could have prevented 36,000 deaths through early May — about 40 percent of fatalities reported to date.

“If you don’t take steps to fight the growth rate aggressively, you get much worse consequences,” Jeffrey Shaman, an environmental health sciences professor who led the study, told The Washington Post.

His team’s analysis used infectious-disease modeling to examine the spread of the virus from March 15, when many people nationwide began staying home, until May 3. The researchers examined transmissions within each county, movement between counties and deaths to chart how the virus spread — and killed — over seven weeks.

Then, Shaman and other researchers modeled another scenario: What if government officials had closed everything down one week earlier?
Disease modelers are wary of reopening the country. Here’s how they arrive at their verdict.

Unlike some of the forecasts that have made headlines in recent weeks, their model does not attempt to predict how certain policies — say, another month of shutdowns, or partial reopening measures — might affect the virus’s spread. It simply shifts the timeline for the country’s response.

Move it back even further, and the results are more dramatic. If the United States had mustered the same kind of political and public will against the virus on March 1, the researchers found, 54,000 fewer Americans would have died of the illness. By Friday, the nationwide death toll had surpassed 93,000.

Obviously anybody who dies was a loser!

If the second wave comes after the election, he'll promote death just out of spite.

It's all about priorities - his electoral priorities. I'm of an age that I should be one of his target votes, what's afflicted the rest of my age group beyond a given distrust in government, and produced blinded voters is a bit hard to fathom - at least it is for me.

We'll just have to ignore the refrigerated trailers piling up outside the hospitals and funeral homes.

Trump's inaction won't keep the country functioning if there's a significant resurgence of disease.

He is hoping 500,000 senior citizens dying will hurt the economy less than a second closure.

Except the majority of those 500,000 seniors are Trump voters.

Everything in his historical behavior as President leads me to believe that any course of action Trump would take in response to a resurgence, barring a not so small miracle, would involve him committing premeditated, first degree mass murder.

We’ve walked the path now. No hiding behind ‘who could have expected’ or ‘it’s my predecessor’s/that other country’s fault’.

The steps taken to mask the nature of events will only become more draconian.
  • Efforts to suppress accurate gathering and documenting of casualties will continue and increase
  • Medical/epidemiological experts will be defamed and ignored
  • Healthcare facilities and workers will be slighted and slandered
  • ‘Rouge’ state officials that stray from the blinkered prescribed course will be attacked, their states threatened with punishment, discontent and unrest in their communities pandered to and outright encouraged
  • Press looking to accurately report on events will be vilified more than ever, perhaps even rising to the level of attempted preemptive muzzling
  • Hail Mary treatments and vaccines will be promoted as being ‘right around the corner’ or actually ready for use

It is a disgusting commentary on the times we are mired in that, while nightmarish to the nth degree, I fully expect all this will happen during a Covid rebound.

This has been a tenure with no boundaries whatsoever, only lines yet to be crossed. Does this Gigeresque chapter in American history end with a no longer seated President executed for murder? Would even that be shocking at this point?

I fear that you will be right.

Add to your list the increase of voter suppression, you know, to combat "fraud". Like banning mail-in voting, or at least suppressing government funding to those states that choose to do mail in voting, coordinating with states to limiting voter precincts, so that less voters can get to the ballot box, etc.

Yep. He’ll be raging during his press conferences but that won’t mean anything any more than it did during the first round.
