Florida set to proceed with 70-team youth baseball tournament this weekend
[thehill.com]

A Florida county is going forward with a 70-team youth baseball tournament this weekend, nearly three weeks after Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) lifted the state's stay-at-home order, according to USA Today.

The Brevard County Commission unanimously authorized the Orlando-area U.S. Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) to resume playing tournaments at the Space Coast Complex in Viera, Fla.

The event could draw upwards of 1,500 people, including players, coaches and family members to a single sports complex.

Nonessential gatherings larger than 10 people are still discouraged by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The USSSA has implemented increased safety measures at the tournament, including more hand sanitizer stations and eliminating the award ceremony.

The curve has been flattened, we did it. Social distancing and masks were never gong to stop COVID-19, just slow it's spread as to not over load our medical care facilities. We did it, time to start phase 1 and begin opening up things.

I think you have totally misunderstood what flattening the curve was about. It was not an end point. The social distancing and quarantining were meant to flatten the curve and keep it flattened. It was not a magical "let's all get together in large groups again" indicator.

The approach you are writing about is a dead ringer for what happened in many areas in connection with the 1918 Flu. Quaranting and isolation reduced the infection rate quite a bit, so people started getting back together. A few months later the flu roared back into activity, most people killed by the flu happened in the later stages of the 1918 flu.
