Mississippi governor says he will sign bill, if it passes, to change 'divisive' state flag
[www.nbcnews.com]

"The argument over the 1894 flag has become as divisive as the flag itself and it’s time to end it," Gov. Tate Reeves said in a tweet Saturday.

-
The governor of Mississippi announced that if the state legislature votes to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag, he will sign the bill.

Gov. Tate Reeves' statement comes as Mississippi lawmakers may consider a measure on the flag as early as Saturday.

"The legislature has been deadlocked for days as it considers a new state flag. The argument over the 1894 flag has become as divisive as the flag itself and it’s time to end it. If they send me a bill this weekend, I will sign it," Reeves said in a tweet Saturday morning.

Mississippi is the last state in the nation to feature the Confederate emblem on its flag, and Reeves has previously said any change to the flag should come through a popular vote rather than the legislature.

He acknowledged in a Facebook post on Thursday, however, that vetoing such legislation would be “pointless.”

Expected to pass this weekend. The design for the new flag will be decided via popular referendum. Overdue, but good.

Princeton taking Woodrow Wilson name off buildings and programs after student protests . Didn't expect that one.

That's a little like voting on whether to lynch someone.

I was going to say something along the lines of "why don't they just go back to whatever flag they had when they first became a State".

After reading up a bit, I have to admit I had no idea that there was no Mississippi State Flag from 1817-1861...that just seems so odd to me.

The new designs should be interesting. There have been two proposed previously, but if the door gets thrown open to other options I can problems arising.

Then getting everyone to use the new flag will be an issue. I was in Georgia last week and you still see it's old flag (which had the confederate battle flag) in use. The old flag design was changed in 2001. Even the current design is based on the National Flag of the Confederacy.

GOOD! FDR and LBJ killed that Democratic Party!

FDR, maybe not so much but he was busy with other things. More so by Truman. But yes, LBJ was the president who did the heavy lifting.

LBJ was implementing what he could of the JFK legacy.

LBJ was implementing what he could of the JFK legacy.

Perhaps in part, but ultimately he had the connections and knowledge of the process and people in Congress to get it done I have some doubts about how much of it JFK could have done if he had not been assassinated, his administration pretty much marginalized LBJ and his expertise and did not have the same ability to arm twist like him.

One can already pick the Stennis flag for their license plate...why not adopt that one?

Stennis was a segregationist. Even his family is asking that the flag not refer to his name.

Similar to renaming military bases, there is now some discussion about renaming the Nimitz class carriers USS John C Stennis and USS Carl Vinson. Both men were ardent segregationists.

What I meant was the JFK agenda, an agenda he never could have succeeded passing and one that LBJ wouldn't have neither championed nor been able to pass but for the atmospheric change following the assassination.

It's Mississippi, the obvious choice already dominates the landscape
