Stadium sponsor FedEx to owner Dan Snyder: change the team's name
Posted by: Lemon Drop
Date: July 03, 2020 08:50AM
and Nike has removed all "Redskins" merchandise from their site. Along with PepsiCo, shareholders of all 3 companies are demanding a name change or the corps need to pull their funds.

The pressure is on. Nobody wants this team until the name is changed. Long overdue.

Until the NFL steps up, it isn’t going to happen.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

D.C. ‘s connection to politics could give it a unique name. I can think of a few.

Statement from Snyder/the team:

[sports.yahoo.com]

(sorry wrong linky)

The NFL has been after Snyder to do this for a long time.

Proving once again who the real owners are: sponsors

I don’t think Snyder would be upset. It’s just business, and no different than when FedEx or whomever before them were allowed to put their name on the building.

Thanks to the activist investors who forced FedEx and Nike's hands. This was not goodwill from corporate America, blithely following the winds of politics.

This change came about because of the hard work of activists to convince large investment firms to use their financial heft to push to end this racist name.

Also, fuck you Dan Snyder.

Also, fuck you Dan Snyder.

He is a real a-hole. There are many examples, but here's one:

[deadspin.com]

Quote

Dan Snyder couldn't see the Potomac river from his gigantic mansion because some trees were in his way. Dan Snyder, being a horrible rich person, decided that he was going to get those 140 trees cut down, despite the fact that they were on national parks property and despite the fact that he had no justifiable reason other than "I am a rich @#$%& who wants to stare at a river while living in my rich @#$%& house" for wanting them cut down. Snyder tried to offer a $25,000 "cash contribution" to the park in return for a permit to clear the trees, but he was rebuffed. Luckily for Dan Snyder, he had government connections to exploit:

Quote

That June, [National Parks Service special assistant] P. Daneil Smith and his NPS colleagues, including the C&O Canal's new interim superintendent, Kevin Brandt, met with Snyder and his attorney at the mansion. There, they sketched out the details of a possible deal.

They agreed to grant Snyder a special use permit to clear 200 feet of trees on the slope behind his house, on the condition that he replace them with 600 native saplings. No one, however, had sought the permission of Montgomery County, Maryland, which had joint custody of the C&O Canal land. Nor had anyone commissioned an environmental assessment, as required by law. And they had ignored the recommendation of the park's horticulture specialists, who warned that clear-cutting even exotic plants would have adverse affects effects on the ecosystem
.

The story goes onto to describe how a Park Ranger who was a whistleblower on this got royally screwed.

Snyder isn't going to change the name unless he is forced or gets a tremendous amount of pressure to do so. He's like the stereotype of a rich a-hole.

Was horribly racist years ago when all sorts of sports teams changed names. But not DC!

I bet they will go with something truly positive, like the Washington Lees.

Merchandise with the new name is already available.

No way, that name was taken and copywritten by Boston years ago!

In that case, this one works too

I’d actually love to see golf clubs integrated with football.

Sounds like that’s veering into doctrinaire dogma. Can no references to First Peoples be used, regardless of earnest intention?

Alas, no. One cannot even name a First People Tribe that has been gone since before America was a country and was defeated by other First People Tribes. And that such a name was given to the land in their honor and memory.

I'm referring to 'Illinois' and the 'Illini'.

[en.wikipedia.org].

By NCAA rules, the name of the state of Illinois is considered 'offensive', and should have to be changed for the Univ of Illinois to remain in the NCAA. They knew they had gone too far, so only the icon (which was never a 'mascot') had to be retired. I DO understand why Chief Illiniwek needed to go, but it was not because of a view of disrespect of that First People. Such nuance is just not possible these days.

However, I saw a recent interview with Ken Burns who argues that we should all be tolerant of excess in the other direction, given the centuries of terrible experiences by those in the minority.

We will see where we land when this is all said and done. But I expect to see the 'Chiefs', 'Indians', and all related names gone. The only one I see left is the Florida 'Seminoles', a name allowed by living members of that tribe.

Bud Selig (Bryan Callen), and Paul Tagliabue (David Herman), the acting commissioners of Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Football League (NFL) respectively. They have come to announcer the new owner for teams in both of their leagues, Little Bull (Orlando Jones), who has made money off of the jewellery, mortgages, and money the white people lost to them over the years. So much money that they have been able to buy several sports teams. In lieu of this, they have decided to change the name of some of the teams. In the NFL, the Washington Redskins, and the Kansas City Chiefs, will now be known as the Washington Red Necks, and the Kansas City Land Robbers. In the MLB, the Cleveland Indians, and the World Series champions Atlanta Braves, will now be known as the Cleveland Klan, and the Atlanta Genocidal Maniacs who Raped our Women and Killed Our Children and Banished Us to Die on Reservations but We're Back you Bastards and We've Got Money and this Time it's Going to be Different Braves.

Living Color was such a great show. I was a house party and we turned off the music to watch Living Color!

The only one I see left is the Florida 'Seminoles', a name allowed by living members of that tribe.

You can just call them tribal members - dead members never vote.

Also, it's not just "allowed" - it's the product a long, ongoing relationship between the university and the Seminole Tribe of Florida that has involved large investments by the university system in cultural preservation and education, respectful recognition and use of Seminole icons and symbols, including a non-mascot/non-caricaturing portrayal of historic Seminole figures. It has also involved the cessation of racist practices, the abandonment of racist mascots, and the repair of that relationship in the wake of those harms.

Thank you for the elaboration. I knew some of the story, not this richer context. I wish this was the reality across the board.
