Unemployed in Texas? Here's your bill.

Texas is telling more than 46,000 out-of-work Texans to return $32 million in unemployment benefits. The state overpaid an average of $700 to individuals and is now saying they must repay $800, which includes a 15% penalty.

According to the commission’s website, the debt cannot be forgiven or dismissed and there is no exception for hardship. "You must repay those benefits even if the overpayment was not your fault."

What an incredibly innovative way to make money! Essentially forcing people to take out 15% loans is pure genius!

15% penalty for the state's mistake is steerpoopie. They've had money for maybe 3 months? 60% APR!

I heard something weeks ago on TV about some overpayment but had forgotten about it.. gee, what else can go wrong for these poor workers. Income taxes due, kids school uncertain, Covid and I’m sure the kitchen sink will stop up.
