He was arrested, perp-walked, detained, tried and found guilty. We'll go from there.

I suppose this means he can now write a book and keep the profits. I’m surprised he didn’t get a pardon but maybe that will come after Nov. 3.

There's nothing to say that prosecutors didn't sit on a few other charges that might suddenly show up some time before the statutes expire. Vexed prosecutors are not something you want in your rear view mirror.

Another reason to pardon. “Any and all related...”

A pardon requires an admission of guilt. Given the crime, that is not something Trump wants to hear during an election.

He fired the prosecutor.

The assistant (not the Trump stooge) took over SDNY. Today he did fire the USAtty in the neighboring EDNY district. It's clear they know they will be gone and need to clean house and erase anything erasable, they have just under 6 months to do that.

Well... they can try and convict his Nixon tattooed back and jail him in a state pen where no pardon can free him.

Please remember, the headlines now read 'Stone Commuted', not 136,671 Dead.

We know which is more important. It's another cruel psychotic Trump trick.

You know what's easier than pardoning your corrupt associates? Not having corrupt associates.

Still a convicted felon, right? So he gets away with not having to serve time, but the label sticks (unless he can get it unstuck on appeal).

The. Most. Corrupt. President. Ever.

(Also, the worst president ever. But we knew that already.)

Stone does not care! He loves all this.

I’m not getting the “commuted” part. Usually, a sentence being commuted means being modified to a shorter time. But Stone hasn’t served any time - so his sentence is being commuted from 40 months to zero?

How is that different from a pardon?

He still has a felony conviction on his record, with an asterisk that says he also got a Get Out of Jail Free card.

If Trump had given him a pardon, Stone could not invoke his 5th Amendment right not to testify in criminal or Congressional investigations into his activities relevant to what he did for Trump. Much safer for Trump to commute Stone's sentence.

What Ted said. Stone himself asked for a commutation presumably because he did not want to face Adam Schiff.

That said, we should not be surprised that there will be pardons issued for many folks on January 19th. Barr, Uday and Qusay, Ivanka, Miller, and so on. And a pardon for Stone at that time.

Could the next president issue a full pardon, and nullify the 5th amendment issues?

No, the pardon has to be accepted by the perp.

The title of this article on Google News* was

“Trump Uses Pardon Power Differently than Other Presidents, Scholars Say”.

ROTFL

Might I also suggest similar breaking stories, such as “The Pope is Catholic, Scholars Say”, or “Bears Appear to @#$%& in the Woods, Scholars Say”

*(sadly, when you click through, it appears that NPR has changed the title - but you can still see it by its original title if you do a Google search for that title.)
