Trump throws Fauci under the bus... letter to NYC: 'it's time'

During a Fox News interview Thursday with Sean Hannity, Trump said Fauci “is a nice man, but he’s made a lot of mistakes.”

And a letter to the editor of NYT:

Vice President Mike Pence recently led a public briefing of the Covid-19 task force with a self-congratulatory statement: “We slowed the spread, we flattened the curve, we saved lives.” False, false, false. Standing quietly behind this series of falsehoods was Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, implying by his presence support of the task force.

While Dr. Fauci has diplomatically disagreed with it from time to time, his overall presence could cause some to believe that the task force has his general approval.

The Trump administration is severely limiting Dr. Fauci’s influence by withholding its permission for interviews, lectures and other public discussions. Consider what our late mutual friend Larry Kramer might have said: “Tony, how can you lend the slightest support to these incompetent idiots who are killing Americans?”

This is a time when Dr. Fauci should not be restricted in expressing exactly how he feels on all issues. This is a time when Dr. Fauci should do the right and courageous thing — resign from the task force. That applies with equal force to Dr. Deborah Birx.

Let’s see, who has made more mistakes regarding the virus; Pres. Trump or Dr. Fauci?

Once he’s fired, Dr. Fauci can go on all the TV shows - well, except for Faux News which will only trumpet his alleged mistakes.

Whining about policy as a TV commentator is wonderful, if ineffective distraction. Salacious talk is a ratings thing, not actionable.

An administration official is anonymously quoted in that WaPo link as saying all the doctors have been told (warned) that if they cross the line they should just quit their day job and “get a cable TV gig.”

They’d love for Fauci to do that, so that he’d have no official capacity any more.

It's beyond horrifying that there won't be any unified national strategy to fight the pandemic until Feb. 2021.
That will be what, close to 300K dead Americans?

Unless some GOP senators and governors grow spines, tell Trump and Pence to @#$%&, and get the work done for the American people.

Odds of that?

Except by standing behind Pence and other's during briefings, Fauci is starting to look like he's endorsing the Administration's policies. He and Brix are starting to look like patsies and stooges of the administration, thereby losing credibility with the public.

Suggesting that Anthony Fauci resign from something - anything - on principle exposes a deep ignorance of the man.

Not sure what you mean by this, but I think he’s got an impressive resume. I think he is a good guy in an impossible situation, knowing that if he quit, he would likely be replaced by a yes man and the country would suffer for it. But yeah, I think he is ruining a stellar reputation at the end of his career by holding his tongue and playing along (“yes, we’re hopeful that we’ll get a vaccine this year”).

Sadly, this has gotten him nothing in return. That’s what happens with Trump. Contact with him is deeply corrosive regardless of your intents.

He has survived eight presidential administrations and is serving in his ninth. He is a survivor, and does not get unhinged by the effect an individual president has on his work.

He knows that his stellar reputation is not going to be destroyed by the lunatic at the top of his chain of command. It seems like others are far more concerned than he is. He's not "holding his tongue and playing along" - he's been doing interviews, and in them even talking about what interviews he's been prevented from taking by his superiors. He's being sidelined by the White House, but he's hardly gone silent.

It seems that the only interviews he does are the ones that his boss lets him do:

Quote

CBS News host Margaret Brennan has claimed that the Trump administration has prevented Dr Anthony Fauci from appearing on her show for three months.

The moderator of CBS’ Face the Nation, claimed on the show on Sunday that the administration had not approved an interview with Dr Fauci since 5 April.

... Ms Brennan added that “we’re committed to bringing you the facts about the virus and the most knowledgeable guests that we can. We think it’s important for our viewers to hear from Dr Anthony Fauci and the Centres for Disease Control (CDC).

“But we have not been able to get our request for Dr Fauci approved by the Trump administration in the last three months.”

Ms Brennan said that her show had also not been able to get an interview with a CDC official in that time, and added: “We will continue our efforts.”

If anyone is "holding their tongue and going along" it's Brix and the idiot head of CDC, it's not Fauchi.
