Day 1 of in-person school in Indiana

Just hours into the first day of classes on Thursday, a call from the county health department notified Greenfield Central Junior High School in Indiana that a student who had walked the halls and sat in various classrooms had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Administrators began an emergency protocol, isolating the student and ordering everyone who had come into close contact with the person, including other students, to quarantine for 14 days. It is unclear whether the student infected anyone else.

“We knew it was a when, not if,” said Harold E. Olin, superintendent of the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation, but were “very shocked it was on Day 1.”

The only question I have is why was the superintendent shocked?

Because if he wasn’t shocked then parents would be demanding that he be fired.

One system in GA opened Friday for in-person schooling. A virtual option is also offered, thank goodness.
Students are encouraged, but not required to wear masks.
Faculty and staff are required to wear masks.
What is wrong with these people.

Great question .

Just read that SC will require that all students wear masks at school. Governor still won't do a statewide universal mask law though.

Clemson just tested its staff and got a 2% positive rate, they're considering this a major victory as the state continues to test at a horrific 18% positive. Those positive staffers have to stay home until they have a negative result.

More like,“I needed daycare so that I could go to work.”

Everyone has been forced into making terrible decisions.

That’s how it’ll be here. The District announced how in-class will work overall, and separately how each school will handle the particulars. On Monday they’re holding an in-person meeting with parents about the virtual option, and parents that want that will sign up until the 5th.

We know we’ll do that for one, the other I’m not as sure as my wife is. The District won’t answer any public questions about why extra-curricular activities aren’t offered for the virtual option, citing only privately that they assume we wouldn’t be interested.

Frequent testing with 14-day quarantine of positives and contacts is unquestionably the right thing to do, medically.

But I fear that it will quickly make a shambles of any attempts at in-person teaching and will become unpopular because of it.

Teachers go back on Monday here.. all of our in-service training will be done on zoom, staff is wear masks and are asked not to congregate.

Then when students return, jam them all together with the teacher in a room.

oh, and the custodian in charge of disinfecting the school went out last week after testing positive.

Fabulous.

I would say it's time to bring in the union, if there is one. If there's no replacement for the custodian/cleaning staff, then an argument could be made that the employer is subjecting you to unreasonably unsafe conditions. (Admittedly, they're doing that anyway, but if they had/have a written policy which stated that a custodian/cleaning crew would be employed to sanitize spaces-- as they really should have-- and then they don't actually do that, they could get in big trouble.)

why are they staring classes in the middle of summer?

but, more importantly, why does the school district allow them in the buildings without masks?

Southern and western states have a summer that stretches for 6-8 months not 3 weeks like some parts of NE and Northern Michigan. The definition of seasons is quite different. It'll likely be just as hot here in October as it is today.

We should have a few more fires burning by then, too … things out here don't really start cooling off reliably until after Halloween - and even that's a stretch these days. Summer's really just started. Next three months will be Hot! Hot! Hot!
