A state court judge said the order could put voters at risk of contracting Covid-19 and "needlessly and unreasonably" burden some of them..

A Texas judge on Thursday lifted an order by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott that limited counties to a single drop-off location for absentee ballots in the Nov. 3 presidential election, siding with Democrats who have denounced the limit as voter suppression.

“The limitation to a single drop-off location for mail ballots would likely needlessly and unreasonably increase risks of exposure to COVID-19 infections, and needlessly and unreasonably substantially burden voters’ constitutionally protected rights to vote,” said state court judge Tim Sulak, who sits in Austin, in a short written order.

Abbott’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment but he was expected to appeal.

And round 2 begins. Here comes the appeal from the GOP voter suppression team.

Or the appearance of fake “official” ballot deposit boxes, ala California.

Transferred (it's easier than formulating a a new argument) from another thread but applicable here as well:

This unrelenting attack on voting rights seems to be boomeranging on the GOP pros who thought it would be a good idea. Actually I doubt any of them thought it a really good idea but adopted it as a "no where else" to go strategy about six or seven months ago or about 3/4 through this Presidential term of office.

Until COVID hit, it was likely - almost certain - Trump would win another term. That was when he became exposed for what and who he is and that was when the GOP electoral machine went into high gear. A lot of the sand they threw in the gears was ill-thought out and came from a state of panic that has proven ineffective and counter productive. In some cases - USPS comes to mind - the pushback had a reverse effect.

For the first time in their lives many people came to value their vote, while others who never did vote decided to join in*. Current turnouts would seem to support that thought. We'll see.

*Imagine if they voted, it's easy if you try...

Not at all. This is their playbook. In the 1980s, they agreed to a consent-decree that forced them to play a bit more fair. That decree was recently lifted and now they're simply back to their old ways.

This is how the republicans operate an election campaign.

40 years ago it was. The guys who'd perfected those tactics are now in a nursing facility eating their dinner through straws .

Back then it was part and parcel of who they were, they were practiced and knew how to pull it off. It still is a part of their election strategy but today they're simply out of practice -- hence the Keystone Cops adaptation of vote suppression.

If your attempt to suppress the vote ends up driving people to vote, you missed the mark.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.
