debate rule change allowing for microphones to be muted

The debate rule change allowing for microphones to be muted is likely to anger the Trump campaign.

In a statement, the non-partisan commission noted: “We realize, after discussions with both campaigns, that neither campaign may be totally satisfied with the measures announced today. One may think they go too far, and one may think they do not go far enough. We are comfortable that these actions strike the right balance and that they are in the interest of the American people, for whom these debates are held.”

Both campaigns had agreed to a format in which each candidate would have two minutes to answer a question from the moderator, before launching into back and forth open discussion.

“The Commission is announcing today that in order to enforce this agreed upon rule, the only candidate whose microphone will be open during these two-minute periods is the candidate who has the floor under the rules,” it said in a statement. Both mics will be unmuted for open discussion.

Still think DT will show up? I'm wondering what excuse he will have to call this 'unfair'.

I am not blocking out any time on Thursday for this debate. Mostly, I don't think it will happen, but I would be watching only for the entertainment value, not because I would expect to learn anything that I don't already know.

if he shows up, he will yell to be heard even if his mic is off.

if he doesn't show, he will claim he had to attend an emergency cabinet meeting (milkshakes will be ordered)

He’ll just yell loud enough for the other mic to pick it up.

I sure hope so - a calm, cool Biden talking to the camera while hysterical Trump flailing in the background is barely audible is to me the very best image this debate could generate.

and really... these aren't even rule changes - they just added a mechanism to insure that the existing rules are followed.

Exactly. He’ll probably start doing the weird walking behind thing he did to Hillary. Hopefully Biden tells him to knock it off.

Trump will go but this time, when the msm reports him as having "lost", he can blame the Commission for "bias" and "favoritism" instead of having to listen to how he totally sabotaged himself.

Trump may sound ridiculous if he's rattling on in the background but you can't make out what he's saying. We'll see.

The problem is that OD's voice really carries, and even standing 12 feet apart, it's likely that Biden's (or another) microphone will pick up what he's saying, and it's also likely that they're going to do split-screen on the two of them when only one is speaking ... so I don't think muting the mic is going to accomplish much of anything. (Unfortunately, there are people out there who talk so loudly that you can hear them from down a hallway...)

Much of the interrupting and bullying is an ongoing attempt to knock Joe off his concentration, and for a @#$%& like Dumbf, it probably feels like a pretty fair technique.

When someone is trying to get a point across while there is commotion in the background, it's obviously not easy to stay on point. For someone with a stutter, it adds yet another wall to break through.

No matter what happens, Dumbf will look stupid, sound stupid, and be stupid. And his base of deplorables will love every minute of it.

So during the "open mike" sessions - we will see all of Dumbf's nastiness, unleashed. Joe needs a few zingers of his own. Will he have any? (Because there are plenty to choose from!)
