SCOTUS Nominee's Cult Accused of Sheltering a Molester...

People of Praise.

Kuehl said that as a 4-year-old child she was molested by a man who lived with her family as part of the group’s communal lifestyle. The abuse lasted for two years, and when her abuser admitted to the behavior, he was simply moved to another house. (Documents reviewed by The Guardian show there were at least two more victims.)...

While some members have spoken out about the community’s supportive environment, others describe it as an authoritarian nightmare. Esther told The Guardian, “The basic premise of everything at the People of Praise was that the devil controlled everything outside of the community, and you were ‘walking out from under the umbrella of protection’ if you ever left.”

Kuehl says that when she tried to speak about the childhood abuse years later, her “handmaid” at the time told her not to “hurt the reputation of the community.”...

...

In completely unrelated news, another judicial candidate was affirmed after being ranked "unqualified" by the ABA. Their guideline is that federal judges should have more than 12 years of practical experience as a trial-attorney before being appointed.

Also, completely unrelated, Amy Coney Barrett practiced law for three years before being appointed to the Seventh Circuit where she has served for three years.

Sorry for all the non-sequiturs.

Why are you calling her the nominee, rather than the next associate justice?

We can continue to assassinate her character - it will have zero effect on her tenure. It might undermine confidence in the SCotUS, the effects of which are debatable.

She will never be impeached and removed for her association with People of Praise, so focusing on it seems a dubious effort to me, from a political standpoint.

It helps us progressives feel righteous and justified in our condemnations, which sadly is most of what we count as accomplishments these days...

Just FYI, in an effort to diversify the Federal bench, it was rumored that something like 14 of folks Obama initially considered (for district judgeships, the lowest level) were reviewed by the ABA and considered “not qualified”. (In contrast, his predecessor, Bush Ii, eventually stopped sending names to the ABA for review).

And that was the end of that for those folks. Obama never actually nominated a single “not qualified” candidate for any Federal judgeship.

The current administration, as we see, is less....um...picky. Nine so far, seven of which have been confirmed by McConnell, et al.
