Study: 11M U.S. Adults Can't Read English
[breakingnews.nypost.com]

WASHINGTON -- About one in 20 adults in the U.S. is not literate in English, meaning 11
million people lack the skills to handle many everyday tasks, a federal study shows. From
1992 to 2003, adults made no progress in their ability to read sentences and paragraphs or
understand other printed material such as bus schedules or prescription labels.

Liberals think it's chic to turn our country into a bi-lingual country!

I visited Ottawa one time and noticed everyone speaks English and French.

People spoke to me in French or English first depending how I was dressed that day!

But that 11 million isn't primarily illegal aliens, it is mostly made up of the sub-sub-genus Americanus Moranis Ignoramus Shakemanus, like our friend namekahS.

What does SPEAKING English or any other language have to do with reading or writing? I was in China and heard people SPEAKING Chinese. What does that have to do with reading or writing it? How many of those 11 million "Americanus Moranis Ignoramus Shakemanus" speak, read and write another language? Thus, not illiterate at all.
Having said that, before you get your panties in a knot, I do believe if you are here and intend to stay here, Se hablo espanol like the romans do.

Only being able to read and write Norwegian didn't keep my grandfather from starting and running his own million dollar business after he came to this country after WWII.

What moron wrote that article of trash ?

Pretty soon NO people that are located inside the territorial boundaries of the USofA will speak, read, write or care about English. The pendulum is swinging that way everyday.

Once again demonstrating your functional illiteracy, because you posted it, Shakeman.

Study after study says people who speak english earn at least 30% more in income than those
who don't. Why don't we make people who live and work here learn the language? It's not
racist. It's the way to better yourself and your improve you living standard. This is one of the
biggest problems we have in this country and no one wants to talk about it. I work in the fast
food business and trying to wait on non english speaking customers is a difficult experience to
deal with. We try to do our best but it can be very frustrating to say the least.

Its sadder when people who are able to read, write and express themselves choose to use that ability to spread ignorance, bias and hate.

The best substitute for intelligence is silence.

Back to basics.
The original post states a couple of questionable conclusion.
The fact that an adult person can not read NOR write in ENGLISH does not make them illiterate.
The original link is not available any more so I can not quote from it but,
"From 1992 to 2003... ", if the base number stayed about the same but the population grew, than logic says the ratio went down, thus improvement, and what would make one think it was the same 11 million who did not learn english in those years.
If the ratio stayed the same as the population grew, it proves nothing either way.

Sorry, it is hard to write with that blue halter top bouncing in the upper corner of my screen. Thanks Sty.

Yes, and they are taking over the world famous San Diego Zoo, as bfd types this out …

Actually, they all live in TJ and drive over in their new Escalades every morning. (We have better malls on this side)
