And for what it's worth, kudos to Gwen Ifill.

I don't believe anyone could complain that she wasn't fair and efficient.

But don't bet that they won't !

Gwen was the professional that I expected her to be.

Ask swampy if she thinks she owes an apology to Ms. Ifill.

Nope... She should have made disclosure of her book deal right up front and she didn't. It would have been the right and fair thing to do, but she missed the opportunity.

That aside, her management of the debate was very good.

McCains camp knew well in advace about the book and had no objections until it looked like
Palin was in trouble.

As long as disclosures are being made then Tom Brokaw should disclose that he has been a go between
his network and the McCain camp in charge of soothing their ruffled feathers.

Oh and Bob Schieffer - personal friend of the Bush family (didn't stop him from moderating a Bush debate)
Also his brother Tom was a former business partner of W who appointed him as Ambassador to Australia.

Do I think either should step down from their upcoming moderator duties ?
No - let them be moderators where they will be under close scrutiny.

A note on Brokaw who I used to respect. The faster they get him off of Meet the Press the better.
He let Steve Schmidt skate around the truth like a olympic medalist where Tim Russert would have shown him
to be the lying mouthpiece that he is. Brokaw is a weak version of his former self and should
go back to retirement and writing books. His days as a reliable newsman are over.

God I miss Tim Russert

This is just dissembling. The complaint was that Ifill would not be able to be a fair moderator. It's too late to pretend that the complaint was actually that she wasn't forthcoming about her book, because there are dozens of posts on this message board to prove otherwise.

Define "well in advance". Ifill admits that she didn't even tell the Campaign Commission about the book untill August.

Stevie...there are dozens of posts on this message board to prove otherwise.

Okay so 25 of us here on this message board discussed it. What about the unwashed public that maybe still don't know? There was an elephant in the room and she failed to acknowledge it.

If I were her publisher, I'd agree.

The book thing is moot. The debate is over, she was just as professional as I predicted she would be, and when her book comes out in January and proves to be a political thesis that works whether Obama has won or not instead of the Obama-ass-kiss that the right insisted on pretending it will be, these old threads will make certain people look pretty goofy.

Swampy -

Please swallow hard and watch this. Painful, I know, it's full of those nasty little facts.

It's difficult to take seriously a post which includes the word "facts" and ties it to a link to msnbc.

I concur, Wurm... And Keith Olberman to boot.

Stevie... Here's what I said about Ms. Ifill.. "That aside, her management of the debate was very good." If you are going to comment on my posts, please read them.

I know that's what you said, I was responding to the carping about "She should have made disclosure of her book deal right up front".

I stand by what I posted. All those posts yesterday crying about Ifill are going to look incredibly foolish come January.

wurm & swampy:

Did you actually watch the end of the Ifill publishing piece?
If there were factual errors, please point them out.
If the Dates were wrong - demonstrate how.
Were Agreements between McCain, Obama and Debate people in error or misleading? If so how?
If there was a lie or misrepresentation - rather than dismiss it out of hand - show me the error of my way.

I can't speak for swampy, but I didn't watch the beginning, middle or end of the piece. My comment had nothing to do with Ifill. It was a general comment. As I said in my original post, I thought she did a fine job moderating. And I think that any concerns of impropriety were proven to be inconsequential.

hey Im a McCain supporter
(and incommunicado over the 3 day weekend
and been itching to read the forum since thursday)

and i think Gwen was "fair and balanced" in her
performance of the debate.

more over i will admit that Biden had better sound bites
than Palin. I like more red meat in the responses and
Biden delivered his side of the issues better than Palin
in my point of view. Oddly enough my wife was bashing
me for bashing Palin?!? Both of the women in my life
(wife and mom) though Palin did outstanding. I thought
she did average.

anyhoo, time will tell come the election.. from seeing the
post activity above this thread lots more to talk and think about!
