Janet Reno rallies Democrats, blasts Bush
Naples Daily News (FL), by Larry Hannan

Monday was a good night to be a Democrat in Collier County.
The Collier County Democratic Club launched its 2006 campaign
kickoff celebration with a speech by former U.S. Attorney
General Janet Reno at the Naples Board of Realtors Conference
Center, 1455 Pine Ridge Road. About 200 people attended the
event. Reno looked into the future and saw good times ahead
for Democrats if they stick together and come up with a
common-sense vision for the future.

Is this he best dems have? EEK!

She should have lost her job after Waco. Clinton should have to spend eternity with her and Madeleine Albright in a menage a trois, but I guess he's been punished enough already sleeping with Hillary.

Refurb, it surprises me that sometimes I agree with you. There is hope.

I agree with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. : "90% of the Republicans are corrupt, and 75% of the Democrats." Clinton killed more Iraqis than Bush did, and when Mad' was asked by Leslie Stahl if the deaths of half a million Iraqi kids was worth it she said "We think it is, because it shows sanctions are working."

We live in a one party state, Gyrene, controlled by corporations profiting directly or indirectly from war. That's why we have permanent warfare. The Clintons are part of the same plutocracy serving ruling class as the Bush family. Do not be deluded to think they oppose each other fundamentally. The differences are only of style.

Clinton, like Bush, prefers to have someone else do his killing.

Well, then he didn't really kill "half a million Iraqi kids," did he?

I'm sure he was just busy with other things.

Mad' said "WE think it (killing .5 million kids) was worth it... " so clearly she was speaking for the Clinton administration, including Al Gore. None of them have ever disassociated themselves from that famous interview in which she implicated them in a massive war crime.

That doesn't mean that she took responsibility for the act.

I think it would be worth it for you to be locked away in an asylum, but I'd say the judge and the neighbor who called the cops on you are the ones most responsible.

The US demanded the sanctions and bullied the UN into applying them. Many European nations wanted them lifted over the years but the US insisted they be maintained because regime change was our official policy, starting under Clinton. We bombed their water & sewage treatment plants then blocked the import of chlorine to kill the bugs in the water supply, and blocked the import of medicines to treat those diseases. It was a blatant campaign of biological warfare, intended to weaken Iraq. Over a million and a half Iraqis died as a result of those untreated diseases, one third of them children.

In 1991, the UN voted to impose those sanctions only so long as Saddam failed to comply with the weapons inspectors.

He failed to comply. It wasn't until Bush Jr. started making noises about invasion that Saddam opened the palaces, warehouses and factories to the inspectors.

Meanwhile, throughout the embargo, Saddam and his family seem to have done pretty well.

I wonder where those children would be had he the kindness to feed them his table scraps.

Cheer up! Soon the Nordic people will be able to
resettle Greenland. After all, they once lived there
and raised some crops. It must have been warmer in
the 11th century.

Actually the people got a food ration under Saddam, and electricity and clean water. And gas was 20 cents a gallon or less.

As bad as he was, and I don't want to give the impression he was anything but a ruthless dictator (one we installed and supported, even after we knew he was slaughtering his own people), the standard of living was better under Saddam than under our governance. Women had opportunities to become educated and hold positions of authority and status. You won't see that, for instance, under our Shiite buddies reign.

Iraq once had the highest standard of living, and lowest levels of illiteracy of any Muslim nation. Saddam was our client until he refused Rumsfeld's oil pipeline deal in '83, then we saw he wasn't interested in playing ball. Halliburton supplied diagonal drilling equipment to the Kuwaitis, who used it to drill under the border, stealing Iraqi oil while calling in loans that bankrolled Iraq's war on Iran, and also keeping oil prices low, which made it difficult for Iraq to repay them. Saddam called in April Glaspie in '90 and asked her what the US response would be to his planned war on Kuwait. She replied "We have no interest in Arab-Arab conflicts," and intimated that we understood Iraq's desires having suffered under colonialism ourselves. Saddam thought he was still our boy, and would back him to become the preeminent power in the region in exchange for low oil prices. The Bush family plays bigger games with higher stakes. He was just a pawn, like we all are.
