A moderate Republican who was leading by double-digits for most of the campaign narrowly won the Governorship of NJ but didn't have any coattails, as Dems hung on to their huge majority in the state legislature and county governments. An open-space bond referendum that was fought by the GOP passed.

Ever since 1851, Virginia's gubernatorial elections have been held in "off-off" years—years in which there are no national (presidential, senatorial, or House) elections; Virginia's gubernatorial elections are held one year after U.S. presidential elections (2001, 2005, 2009, etc.). (Most states hold gubernatorial elections either on presidential-election years or on "off" years, when there are congressional elections.) This fact, coupled with the no-consecutive-terms rule, has been charged with limiting interest and voter turnout in gubernatorial elections in Virginia. There are never incumbents in the race, and voters are always being introduced to new politicians, so they often choose between two little-known politicians every four years. The no-consecutive-terms rule also, some argue, makes it very difficult for the state's chief executive to make sweeping changes in four short years. Of note, in every Virginia gubernatorial election starting with 1977, the governor elected has been from the opposite party as the President elected by the nation in the previous year, even when Virginia had strongly voted for the President in question, as with Ronald Reagan.

You missed another well known fact. In every Virginia gubernatorial election starting with 1977 the governor who put on his left sock first and wore black shoes but didn't drive work came from the opposite party. Except when there was rain in the forecast.

Oh, and in a Congressional district of NY that has been Republican since the 1840's, a Democrat was elected for Representative for the first time. Shows what happens when the neocon talk show hosts and politicians meddle in a race where the GOP candidate had the endorsement of the local county Republicans and others including someone as conservative as Newt Gingrich.

Off in a corner licking their wounds. Probably mumbling something about tea parties and the descent of the Republican party. The angry mobs bitch slapped them for their arrogance in trivializing the grassroots movement. Hopefully the Blue Dog Dems will take the lesson to heart when it comes to voting for big government spending and taking over of the private sector.

Yeah, no kidding. It's as if they've (Dak and Swamp) had given up and went off to sulk. The least bit of blood and they coming running back with their tails all wagging, only to find there's no meat. So out of their desperation they try to make something. Then when presented tangible arguments, respond with:

What angry mobs ? From what little attention I've paid, the race that the teabaggers tried to influence fell to the democrats for the first time since the civil war, Corzine was down double digits a couple moths ago and actually staged a surprising comeback, and Virginia followed a 30 year trend.

What real "mavericky" candidate was elected ? The only semblance of a remote possibility I have had in possibly coming within several miles of agreement with you has been when you paint with a broad brush and state , and I paraphrase, that all politicians are corrupt scum. So really what has changed in your eyes ?

Michael Steele said these words specifically for you this morning .

"I let you pick apart at the bones of NY-23. God bless you. Hope you can find greasel to chew on."

As far as I am concerned, I'd rather have a true Democrat in there rather than a Republican turncoat that I have no doubt would have gone over to the other side once in. Next year, baby. Next year.

Well Dakota, you and the rest of the neocons and teabaggers keep on declaring life-long Republicans to be RINO's and see what you are left with. Just keep on making it easier for the Democrats to win. Ultimately the race in NY shows that they can not bring in a conservative carpet-bagger running as a third-party candidate and expect to win over a local one.

Despite all of Obama's efforts, the corrupt mob boss Corzine lost in New Jersey.

What will Democrats do in the 2010 elections? Will they try to grab on to Obama's short coattails, or will they distance themselves from him?

So whatever it is that has caused the forum to slow down, I don't think it is the election results. Maybe folks are just getting bored with it.

I think this election showed that the next election will not be Repub vs Dem as much as progressive vs conservative. Even here in FL, where the RNC jumped up to crown Crist their man for the Senate primaries, Marco Rubio is making headway against the RNC machine. Rubio is solid conservative, Crist is a RINO. He stood with Obama on the stimulus and health care. It will be interesting to see how the Republicans in FL (not D.C.) feel about that.

The solution to the problem is to find a solution to the problem.

Elections? Nothing much going on here in our area of Kansas. Some votes on local taxes maybe.

Christie has promised to cut taxes and shrink government. He hasn't revealed how on earth he will manage to do so. I guess citizens of NJ can look forward to lots of "fees" and sky-high property taxes, which is the usual result of Republican governors' "tax cuts".

Not many people in Va cared about the candidates. It was all very boring. And why most didn't vote. Republicans can try to spin it anyway they want, but they know their candidates stunk too. With no consecutive terms it's easy to get blase about it. Even in a heavy republican district they decidedly handed the republican incumbent his walking papers for shady dealings. Meaning the republicans voted for the democrat. No message for either party, nothing to spin.

You forgot to add "sky-high debt." That was how the last NJ Governor named "Christie" paid for her 30% income tax cut.

it's all symbolic, but the truth is the symbolism of victories in either state would have been a lot greater than the reality of losses in both.

VA is a non-issue but NJ is important, just not life-and-death important. Look at NY, NJ and MA - republican governors when Clinton was in office. didn't matter much then and should not matter much now.

Obama had to campaign, otherwise the losses would have been laid at his feet.

What amazes me is how FEW people vote in local elections. Atlanta Mayor voters totaled about 600,000 last I heard. New York was low numbers too.

Will be a runoff. All candidates are lame. No one wants to deal with Atlanta's crumbling infrastructure, high taxes and huge debt. Several mayors managed to keep this hidden.
