Why is it that "New" Christian sects get all freaky about 'Christ and Christmas" ?

I mean, you don't see us Catholics going totally apeshite about stuff like this. And our sect of Christianity is, like, THE first "Christians". I mean, yeah, statements go out about the meaning of Christmas and all, but it's not like we get all religious about it confused smiley

Are these 'churches' just trying to prove that they're "More Christian" than anyone else ? Or are they just angry villagers smiley

Dunno. It's weird.

Those same people who make a fuss about pagan celebrations at Halloween will go around promoting the Egyptian god Horus and celebrating Thor and his devil companion in December and somehow convince themselves that they're worshiping a Christian god.

You might think that after awhile someone would figure out he's been a bit gullible about the whole thing and decide to relax and enjoy life for a change, but that just doesn't seem to happen.

It's not like that's the actual day anyway. Wasn't the season we know as Christmas simply co-opted from the 'yule' and other winter holidays (even the tree itself?!). So going back to the general term 'holiday' seems to be more appropriate. smiling smiley

Blame some friggin Roman Emperor. Constantine what's his name.
It's Sun's Day.

I'd like to end the whole gift and spending money thing and just have eggnog with the whole village with work and politics maybe even religion outlawed for three days .
Superbowl should happen on this holiday, too. :-)

I heard a quote once, can't remember where, or even the exact quote, that said something to the effect of newer converts to a particular faith being more fervent than those born into it. I think it was either about Islam in particular and/or religions in general.

BTW, the OP must not have heard of Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, who holds quite a high rank in the Officer corps of the Defenders of Christmas™, but I tend to agree, most Catholics I know* are pretty much blase about it all.

*keep in mind, most of the Catholics I know are all from either San Francisco or South Philly

Same could be said for ex-smokers . . .

Former alkies and narcs fall into that pattern.

I thought Christ's birthday was in January but then I use to believe that a virgin gave birth. Makes it hard to look down on those who believe in magic underpants.

Any mature Christian knows that the actual birth day of Jesus was most likely not December 25. And that there is no biblical mandate to celebrate that birth. It's just something Christians do to honor a certain Someone they think highly of. And rather than carve out a whole new holiday date, they just recycled an obsolete but still-celebrated holiday leftover from an obsolete religion.

Not a whole lot different than retreading "God Save the Queen" into "My Country Tis of Thee."

So, as a Christian I don't get particularly bent about the details of celebrating of an arbitrary, extra-biblical holiday. But I do get a little bent by Christians who use an incomplete understanding of the holiday to embarrass the Christian faith...or non-Christians to ridicule it.

Yeah. We have a long history of murdering, torturing and otherwise persecuting a lot of people for not being able to sing "My Country Tis of Thee." We also ignored 6 the deaths of millions of people in the holocaust because they didn't sing it like we do. We should acknowledge that we're just stupid, we stole the song and our version is a horrible distortion of the original that's not worthy to be sung.

How embarrassing for all Americans to even be associated with such a song!

I've always wondered what made a pagan ceremony. I mean, why is christmas different than a druid dance at stonehenge?

Because the purpose of Christmas is to sit around for days on end trying to eat up all of the perishables that wouldn't have kept in the cellar to be used through the coldest months, and fattening up for the winter.
Dancing would be counterproductive.
