[surround sound system] what is this thing?

if you look at this, 4th picture ooks like this one below. What is this little thing. I glanced over the description but I didn't see what this is. Thanks

I have that with my Yamaha - as Ken said it is the microphone used to balance out the speakers.

You place it where you plan to sit and run a sound program built into the AV receiver. It makes a series of sounds from each speaker and then sets the relative volume for each. In that way they are correctly balanced for your location. You can raise and lower the volume, it all stays balanced.

very easy to do and works really well. The only tweak I did was boost the subwoofer a bit (I like a bit more rumble than it does).

Yamaha makes some very nice AV receivers. I compared them to several other brands and found them to be much better in terms of performance and value.
