Upgrading RAM on new 13" MBP

my son is drooling at his soon to be purchased 13" MBP. his research says he can install 16GB of RAM even though the Apple Blue Shirt says that officially he's to tell the customer 8GB and the site specs say configurable to 8GB.

Mom, who hasn't had time to check herself wants to know from the forum collective mind:

1. is this model really upgradable to 16GB?
2. will he truly see a speed benefit to going beyond 8GB?
3. is installing RAM on these new machines tricky or brain-dead easy?

1. Yes
2. Maybe, depending on usage
3. Closer to the latter than the former

We tested, certified, and then published on 16GB A-OK for these machines right after they came out. They use DDR3L Low Voltage 1.35v for best results... smiling smiley

Oh man, remember when this insult referred to theoretically clueless Best Buy sales people? Oh Apple, how the mighty have fallen!

My 2011 13" MacBook Pro is running very happily with 16GB of RAM.

Oh Apple, how the mighty have fallen!

Nobody's fallen.

If Apple doesn't sell a 16G upgrade for a model, they're not going to say is supports 16G. That's nothing new. The Apple Blue Shirt was doing his job.

Because we can't say whether or not there will be a noticeable difference in this case, I'd say hold off on the extra 8Gs. He may not see a problem with 8G.
