Ready to go to Lion/ML!
Posted by: sekker

Just got Sheepsaver to work running several legacy apps. I just successfully transferred the COI build to my son's machine that's running Lion, and it worked great.

My current set of 'Classic' apps that will migrate with me to ML:
Jewelbox
Cricket Graph
DNA Strider
GeneWorks

If I can find my older versions on older machines, I'll look for:
Loony Labyrinth
Crystal Quest

What's amazing is just how old the graphics appear on these apps, but how useful the core apps really are. Jewelbox is still fun - plays music even!

EDIT: So tell me, what cool 'Classic' apps should I load up when I get my new MBA/P/R later this year?

Will be replacing a 5+ year old MBP that's had three logic boards replaced by Apple. On my fifth battery.

Not really sure if I'm going low MBA mobile, medium 13, or MBPR.

I use this machine daily - cost is not really the issue. By keeping my machine a full 5 years, it's easy to justify a replacement when I have software ready to go.

Ironic, actually - most people think of my group as tech-savvy. Yet, our machines tend to be used longer than our peers. SSD upgrades, etc - can really stretch our capital expense budget.

I'm hesitant to go MBPR due to the lack of serviceability. But I know the text output would be ideal for my use. I may wait for a 13 MBPR.

None of this would be possible without getting my legacy data files readable post Rosetta.

Do visit an Apple Store to do a side-by-side.

Have done so, and then gone back to Best Buy to look again.

I'm even considering a third option - keep the MBP basically tethered to my work monitor and keyboard, keep an older MBP at home, sync main files via Dropbox.

Buy an iPad keyboard cover and see how much I can do via this iPad.

For my main work, I'll need a real Mac. But informal uses - like now - the iPad is great.

CricketGraph is still the best graphing app ever written.

RIP, Greg the DogSitter. You are missed.

I think it'll work under ML via COI/Sheepsaver.

Make your graph, then print to save at 400% resolution. Should save as pict format.

Save to unix shared drive.

Open in Preview set to run in 32bit mode and convert to whatever format you like. Should be 300 dpi.

I definitely agree with that statement. I've also installed SheepShaver (v. 2.3) but I haven't figured out how to install more apps in particular CricketGraph. Some pointers would be appreciated.

Ok, that's the tricky part. The key is getting Sheepsaver working properly. When you launch your classic OS environment, then you should see a desktop with your hard drive plus a second drive labeled 'unix'. That is the same destination as the 'shared' folder on Mac OS X. What I do is put the classic app in that shared folder, then it appears in the unix drive in the classic environment.

I reverse that process for files, etc., from my classic apps.

Here's the tricky part for me at least. Sometimes, sheepsaver launches without loading the unix folder. I think it's a preference thing, but I have not yet figured it out. What worked for me today was launching a standard Sheepsaver after using a COI build. Fixed the problem. Ironically, I could use just the COI build on my son's Macbook, read the unix drive fine.

I've heard that comment before, but I don't understand why people liked it so much. I used it quite a bit back in the day, but I was very happy to see the last of it. We switched to DeltaGraph, and although it had its quirks, it seemed far more capable to me, at least for what we needed to do with it.

Yeah, but with the speed at which Apple's making us buy (and learn) new OS's, the question is: are you ready for MacOSX Smilodon?

With COI working, the zoo's the limit!

As for Delta Graph, my time spent was nothing but frustration trying to get a publication-quality output.

Had more luck with DeltaGraph than with Cricket, because DeltaGraph allowed us to export graphs in an Illustrator-compatible format, which our version of Cricket could not do. So we were able to do whatever we needed to them once they were finalized. I believe I also converted the DeltaGraph symbol font to Type 1 Postscript, which solved some problems.

Hey, running Classic on Intel could be the "Prehistoric" aspect of the "Smilodon" name...
